📋 Description

• The Senior Staff Attorney will report directly to the Legal Director and collaborate with the legal team to supervise multiple attorneys, both formally and by leading litigation teams.

• Manage a robust caseload of litigation that aligns with GLAD Law's organizational objectives, including precedent-setting cases against the federal government.

• May provide assistance with GLAD Law's ongoing policy initiatives.

• Develop and implement strategies utilizing legislation, litigation, policy, and public education to promote justice based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and HIV status, while also demonstrating a commitment to racial justice.

• Contribute to the strategic decision-making process within the legal department, assist in identifying and evaluating matters suitable for impact litigation, and lead cases in both state and federal courts and other disputes.

• Oversee litigation teams, which includes involvement in case and client development, conducting legal research, drafting pleadings and briefs, managing discovery and motion practice, and handling hearings, trials, and appeals.

• Lead and support amicus curiae efforts through brief writing and coordination.

• Supervise several staff attorneys and appropriately delegate tasks to junior staff, including those related to policy work.

• Assist with legislative or other policy matters that further GLAD Law's strategic goals, as needed.

• Offer technical expertise and support to private litigators and organizations dealing with complex LGBTQ issues in state and federal courts and government agencies.

• Provide assistance for GLAD Law Answers, the legal information and referral service of GLAD Law, including processing legal intakes and offering individual support or legal referrals to those seeking legal assistance.

• Participate in internal working groups and committees as required.


⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and admission to practice law in at least one state in the United States.

• A minimum of 10 years of litigation experience, encompassing motion practice, trial practice, and/or appeals.

• Proven capability to lead complex litigation efforts.

• Candidates with litigation experience transferable to this role, including significant experience in constitutional, civil rights, or administrative law litigation (even if not specifically focused on LGBTQ+ issues) are highly encouraged to apply.

• Demonstrated dedication to addressing LGBTQ+, HIV, or related social justice issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community, including racial justice.

• Familiarity with the existing legal landscape impacting these communities.

• Knowledge of LGBTQ+ law and/or policy, anti-discrimination law, healthcare, education, family law, administrative law, and/or constitutional law.

• Proficiency in conducting complex legal research; drafting briefs, memos, and advocacy materials to the highest standard; and articulating arguments clearly in court, legislative, or public contexts.

• Experience in supervising, mentoring, or managing attorneys or other legal staff, including reviewing work products and supporting professional development.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in client interactions, client development, all aspects of litigation, advocacy with government officials, and public persuasion.

• A commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration and support, being a considerate colleague, and approaching discussions with grace and an assumption of good intentions.

• Active engagement in continuing legal education, seeking feedback, and demonstrating growth in responsibility or expertise throughout their career.

• Experience in collaborating on cross-functional projects with diverse stakeholders, both internally and externally.

• Ability to work independently as well as part of a cohesive team.
