
Senior Software Engineer β Wikidata Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +30 more states.
β’ Design, develop, and sustain backend systems and APIs that support the query infrastructure of Wikidata.
β’ Enhance the reliability, observability, and automation of the Wikidata Query Service and its data pipelines.
β’ Integrate services from the Wikidata Platform with various systems and data sources within Wikimedia.
β’ Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), data engineers, and product teams to guarantee stability and scalability amidst increasing usage.
β’ Monitor production systems, address operational incidents, and proactively identify and rectify bottlenecks.
β’ Assist with platform migrations and system upgrades.
β’ Contribute to deployment automation, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) workflows, and service instrumentation.
β’ Engage in code reviews, design discussions, and technical planning sessions.
β’ Document systems and share knowledge with team members as well as the wider technical community at Wikimedia.
β’ Over 5 years of experience as a backend or platform engineer, focusing on distributed systems or data platforms.
β’ Profound understanding of database and/or knowledge graph representation technologies and their associated standards.
β’ Expertise in Java, C++, or other system programming languages.
β’ Experience in building and managing production-grade services with Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
β’ Familiarity with contemporary observability tools, including metrics, logging, and tracing.
β’ Background in data processing systems such as graph databases, search indexes, or data processing pipelines.
β’ Capability to work collaboratively across various disciplines and communicate effectively.
