Senior Software Engineer – Wikidata Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +30 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain backend systems and APIs that support the query infrastructure of Wikidata.

• Enhance the reliability, observability, and automation of the Wikidata Query Service and its data pipelines.

• Integrate services from the Wikidata Platform with various systems and data sources within Wikimedia.

• Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), data engineers, and product teams to guarantee stability and scalability amidst increasing usage.

• Monitor production systems, address operational incidents, and proactively identify and rectify bottlenecks.

• Assist with platform migrations and system upgrades.

• Contribute to deployment automation, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) workflows, and service instrumentation.

• Engage in code reviews, design discussions, and technical planning sessions.

• Document systems and share knowledge with team members as well as the wider technical community at Wikimedia.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience as a backend or platform engineer, focusing on distributed systems or data platforms.

• Profound understanding of database and/or knowledge graph representation technologies and their associated standards.

• Expertise in Java, C++, or other system programming languages.

• Experience in building and managing production-grade services with Service Level Objectives (SLOs).

• Familiarity with contemporary observability tools, including metrics, logging, and tracing.

• Background in data processing systems such as graph databases, search indexes, or data processing pipelines.

• Capability to work collaboratively across various disciplines and communicate effectively.
