Senior Software Engineer – Reliability Foundations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Designing, constructing, and enhancing large-scale production systems that are scalable, dependable, and easy to maintain.

• Adapting to various working methods as needed—integrating with teams, developing shared platform capabilities, or collaborating on cross-functional initiatives to elevate system quality.

• Engaging with partner team codebases and shared systems to deliver significant enhancements to production services.

• Taking ownership of the outcomes for each task—contributing to solution development and driving it through to execution.

• Collaborating with multiple teams to identify and resolve systemic issues in distributed systems—such as scaling limits, cascading failures, performance bottlenecks, and gaps in fault tolerance.

• Leading investigations into production challenges, and translating insights into tangible improvements with the teams responsible for the systems.

• Ensuring that enhancements are embraced and can be sustained by the teams that manage the systems in the long term.

• Mentoring engineers within our team and assisting partner teams in enhancing their engineering practices.

• Making informed trade-offs that balance reliability, performance, and product delivery speed.

• Assisting in establishing technical direction through design discussions, code reviews, and hands-on contributions.

• When appropriate, developing shared components or libraries that facilitate scalable improvements across services.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in designing and building large-scale, production-oriented systems.

• Strong backend engineering expertise (Java preferred, but experience with Python or Golang is also welcome), with the ability to work across the technology stack when necessary.

• Proven track record of enhancing the quality, scalability, and reliability of real-world systems through practical engineering.

• Experience in contributing to system design and architecture within distributed systems.

• Capability to diagnose and resolve intricate issues in production environments.

• Demonstrated experience in mentoring engineers within a team setting.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills—able to work effectively across multiple teams.

• Adherence to disciplined coding practices, including code reviews, testing, and sustainable system design.
