This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +19 more states.
• Develop and sustain server-side functionalities within our Next.js App Router codebase utilizing TypeScript — including route handlers, server components, server actions, streaming, ISR, and revalidation strategies.
• Craft and secure integrations with third-party APIs that drive our content, market data, and subscription experiences. We place a high value on executing this effectively: timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, fallbacks, and graceful degradation during upstream service failures are prioritized considerations, not afterthoughts.
• Manage caching strategies across Redis and Cloudflare, striking a balance between freshness, performance, cost, and crawler behavior.
• Deploy and manage services on AWS using Docker, with comprehensive instrumentation in DataDog to identify issues before our readers and crawlers do.
• Develop significant end-to-end coverage using Microsoft Playwright for the most critical workflows.
• Enhance the site for actual consumption by SEO crawlers: rendering strategies, structured data, sitemap generation, canonicalization, hreflang, robots directives, performance budgets, and crawl budget management.
• Collaborate with our front-end engineers at the intersection of server and client, while also working alongside content, marketing, SEO, and platform teams throughout the organization.
• Utilize AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor) as an integral part of your daily routine — we are committed company-wide to leveraging the latest tools and methodologies to maximize everyone's impact.
• Integrate with our CMS for effective content management.
• Over 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial time dedicated to the server side of a production web application.
• Proficient in TypeScript and Next.js, including the App Router, server components, route handlers, ISR, and streaming.
• Proven experience in integrating third-party APIs in production environments, with well-defined opinions on safe integration practices. You’ve tackled flaky upstream issues at odd hours and have insights on best practices.
• Strong foundational knowledge in caching (Redis or similar) and CDN behavior (Cloudflare or similar), including cache invalidation, stale-while-revalidate patterns, and the trade-offs between edge and origin.
• Familiarity with AWS, Docker, and contemporary CI/CD workflows.
• Understanding of how SEO crawlers perceive a website: how Googlebot processes JavaScript, factors leading to soft 404s, the impact of canonical and hreflang tags on indexing, differences between Core Web Vitals in CrUX versus lab data, and considerations for crawl budget management on large sites.
• Production observability instincts — you rely on DataDog dashboards, logs, and traces rather than making assumptions.
• Experience in creating maintainable end-to-end tests with Playwright, Cypress, or similar tools.
• Flexible, remote work environment (*see our open states above).
• No “vacation policy” (not to be mistaken for a “No vacation” policy).
• Generous fully-paid parental leave.
• $1,000 annually to invest in stocks of your choice.
• Extremely low premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.
• Comprehensive compensation package, including company equity.
