Senior Software Engineer, Database Engineer

📋 Description

• Design, manage, and enhance relational database systems capable of handling data at petabyte scale.

• Take ownership of the database serving layer from start to finish, focusing on query performance, cost management, and system availability.

• Optimize queries, develop indexes, and refine schemas for petabyte-scale Postgres/Citus databases.

• Leverage AI-assisted analysis to pinpoint compression and data modeling opportunities, implementing validated changes in production.

• Create automated solutions for database operations including pgbouncer provisioning, disk scaling, and blue-green deployments.

• Assess database modifications prior to their deployment in production environments.

• Oversee CDC pipelines utilizing PeerDB, Fivetran, and Debezium, and troubleshoot replication issues.

• Transition workloads from first-generation infrastructure and test new data storage solutions.

• Develop AI-native runbooks and internal tools.

• Engage in asynchronous collaboration across U.S. and Canada working hours.

• Align schema changes with multiple product-engineering teams.

• Take part in an on-call rotation.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5–8 years of experience in building and managing production PostgreSQL environments (Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or similar distributed Postgres).

• Comprehensive SQL optimization expertise, including Explain Plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, and query planner behavior in distributed settings.

• Practical experience with CDC tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.

• Proficient in database profiling using pganalyze or comparable tools.

• Experience in production automation using Python or Go.

• Regular use of AI coding tools like Claude or Copilot.

• Proven history of employing AI-assisted analysis to achieve quantifiable cost or performance enhancements in production database systems.

• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation approximately every 15 days, subject to regional compliance review.
