Senior Software Engineer – Autonomy Core Frameworks

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee the architecture, design, implementation, and development of essential frameworks that support Torc's autonomous driving stack, encompassing state management, inter-component communication, abstraction layers, and shared utilities.

• Propel the technical direction for real-time C++ architectural components and patterns that facilitate system-wide data flow, component coordination, error management, and operational observability.

• Create scalable architectural patterns and abstractions for autonomous driving functionalities while guiding long-term design decisions for the platform.

• Work collaboratively with Behavior and Perception teams to ensure clear integration boundaries and cohesive shared abstractions.

• Conduct architecture, design, and code reviews, while instituting engineering standards for reliability, maintainability, testability, and scalability.

• Provide mentorship to software engineers through technical coaching, architectural insight, and daily collaboration.

• Advocate for validation, testing strategies, observability frameworks, and practices that ensure production readiness.

• Execute root cause analysis on complex platform-level challenges and drive enhancements to reliability, performance, and resilience.

• Define and refine simulation and validation frameworks for testing across various operational scenarios and edge cases.

• Assess emerging architectural patterns, systems research, and advanced methodologies.

• Articulate architectural concepts and technical vision across engineering, product, and leadership teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, or a Master's degree with 6+ years of professional experience, or proven success in designing and evolving complex production software platforms with ownership of architectural decisions.

• Extensive experience with C++17 and more recent standards.

• Proficiency in using Python for scripting and system integration.

• Experience in autonomous systems/robotics, distributed systems, or complex embedded environments utilizing middleware with publish-subscribe communication patterns.

• Strong background in testing, continuous integration, and build systems.

• In-depth experience with systems-level software design, managing technical debt, refactoring large codebases, and evolving platforms while preserving stability and performance.

• Background in mentoring engineers through technical leadership, architecture reviews, code reviews, and establishing scalable engineering standards.

• Strong command of modular/composable architecture, design patterns, concurrency, testing strategies, and long-term maintainability.

• Bonus: Familiarity with robotics middleware such as ROS 2.

• Bonus: Expertise in distributed systems design, consensus algorithms, state synchronization, event-driven architectures, and deterministic replay.

• Bonus: Knowledge of ISO 26262, SOTIF, ASPICE, or other safety-critical software development standards.

• Bonus: Experience with GitHub Actions and Jenkins.

• Bonus: Familiarity with Bazel and Bazel-based build systems.

• Bonus: Experience in designing observability, logging, and monitoring systems for complex distributed systems.
