
Senior Search Engineer – OpenSearch

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Create and develop search functionalities for the OMS+ platform.
• Design index mappings, analyzers, and sharding strategies tailored for extensive, high-cardinality enterprise catalogs.
• Construct and manage indexing pipelines that are synchronized with SAP source systems, including mechanisms for both full reindexing and incremental updates.
• Design and optimize queries, involving query DSL, scoring and boosting, synonyms, stemming, fuzzy and typo tolerance, faceting, and aggregations.
• Contribute to the measurement of relevance and demonstrate enhancements in search quality.
• Analyze customer catalogs and refine index and query designs for client environments.
• Collaborate with implementation and solution engineering teams to address customer-specific relevance needs.
• Identify and resolve search performance issues related to costly queries, mappings, analyzers, sharding, and data modeling.
• Implement vector and hybrid search in conjunction with lexical search when semantic matching can enhance results.
• Specify platform requirements, including cluster sizing, configuration, index lifecycle policies, snapshots, and upgrades.
• Develop well-documented search APIs for the TypeScript product stack.
• Define search health and quality indicators that are surfaced by the platform.
• Work with product management on the roadmap for search priorities and with solution engineering concerning multi-tenant considerations.
• Document search architecture and decisions regarding relevance.
• Review the search-related contributions of teammates and elevate standards for query design and relevance rigor.
• Extensive, hands-on experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, preferably with independently designed and built production search systems.
• Proficiency in query DSL, mappings, analyzers, and aggregations.
• Demonstrated success in relevance engineering with quantifiable improvements in search quality.
• Knowledge of index and cluster design, sharding, mapping design, query cost, and Lucene fundamentals.
• Strong troubleshooting skills for slow or costly queries, mapping and analyzer errors, and subpar search results.
• Experience in developing high-throughput ingestion and indexing pipelines against record-keeping systems.
• Proficient in TypeScript/JavaScript and/or Python.
• Comfortable collaborating directly with customers and delivery teams.
• Ability to partner with a distinct platform or IT team regarding requirements and diagnostics.
• Clear communication skills and documentation of decisions and trade-offs related to relevance.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Resume must be submitted in English.
• Preferred: experience with vector and semantic search, embeddings, OpenSearch k-NN, hybrid ranking, or learning-to-rank.
• Preferred: familiarity with OpenSearch Dashboards, Data Prepper, Logstash, or Kafka-based ingestion.
• Preferred: experience with SAP or ERP material master and catalog data.
• Preferred: knowledge of query understanding, entity extraction, intent classification, spell correction, or autocomplete.
• Preferred: understanding of multi-tenant search architecture and tenant data isolation.
• Preferred: experience in customer-facing implementation, delivery, or professional services.
• Preferred: experience with containers and Kubernetes.
• Preferred: contributions to OpenSearch, Lucene, or other open-source search initiatives.
• Full-time contractor arrangement.
