This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.
• Serve as the engineering safety partner for the Austin site, collaborating with TTE, laser, facilities, and operations teams.
• Evaluate and manage risks throughout the phases of design, installation, validation, commissioning, and routine operations.
• Lead or facilitate HAZID, FMEA, JHA, what-if reviews, and task-focused risk assessments.
• Examine system designs, modifications, and experimental configurations to ensure early safety integration.
• Convert hazard findings into design requirements, interlocks, procedures, and operational controls.
• Offer hands-on safety assistance during installation, facility modifications, subsystem integration, validation, and commissioning.
• Identify and mitigate hazards prior to the commencement of work and before systems are authorized for operation.
• Create safe operating envelopes, startup/shutdown procedures, lockout-tagout boundaries, access controls, permits, and readiness evaluations.
• Establish and monitor corrective actions, engineering controls, administrative controls, and procedural safeguards until resolution.
• Develop and manage risk assessments, safety reviews, operating constraints, work instructions, and engineering safety documentation.
• Collaborate with central safety leadership and safety system definitions based in Germany.
• Engage in investigations of incidents, near-misses, and abnormal events; assist in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive measures.
• Provide technical safety advice and support project-specific safety training initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, and other relevant standards.
• A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
• Over 5 years of experience in systems safety, engineering safety, operational safety, or a closely related technical position within a high-risk or highly regulated setting.
• Proficient in conducting structured hazard analyses and translating outcomes into engineering and operational controls.
• Capability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams in a dynamic R&D, prototype, or advanced manufacturing context.
• Familiarity with low-voltage electrical, mechanical, laser, cryogenic, or process-related hazards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Willingness to work hands-on in a rapidly evolving technical environment.
• Experience with Class 3B/Class 4 laser systems, laser laboratories, or high-energy optical systems is a plus.
• Background in low-voltage industrial electrical systems, mains-fed three-phase equipment, interlocks, grounding, isolation, lockout-tagout, and secure access boundaries is beneficial.
• Knowledgeable about commissioning, startup, validation, and operational readiness processes is advantageous.
• Experience in supporting safety during construction, facility build-out, equipment installation, or laboratory expansion projects is a plus.
• Understanding of risk assessment methodologies in R&D, industrial, energy, aerospace, or complex equipment settings is advantageous.
• Experience working with international teams or in matrixed organizations is beneficial.
• CSP, PE, CFSE, LSO, or similar professional certifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
• Must fulfill applicable work eligibility requirements for the United States or Germany, as relevant.
