
Senior Policy Advisor, Trade Diplomacy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.
• Offer strategic insights and thought leadership regarding trade and diplomatic interactions with Japan, aligned with broader global climate and energy objectives.
• Monitor and analyze developments in Japan’s trade relations, focusing on key partner nations and various bilateral and multilateral frameworks and agreements (e.g., FTAs), government strategies and publications (e.g., Green Transformation Strategy), and industrial policy priorities, such as the 17 Strategic Fields under Japan’s growth strategy, along with commercial factors affecting both traditional and clean energy supply chains to evaluate their implications on Japan’s energy and economic security priorities and identify opportunities for strategic action.
• Create analyses, presentations, briefings, and other materials to contribute to E3G’s strategic discussions internally and communicate our analyses and recommendations to a diverse range of external stakeholders in both written and oral formats.
• Enhance E3G’s networks and relationships with pertinent institutions and stakeholders in trade, energy, and economic security – particularly civil society organizations (CSOs), as well as government officials, research institutions, trade associations, and key private sector players, mainly in Japan and major trade partner nations, to foster productive collaborations that advance the program’s goals.
• Collaborate with E3G’s Japan specialists and trusted partners to maintain and expand the team’s connections with diplomats, foreign missions, and trade representatives to share analysis and strategic advice, including organizing and presenting in both online and in-person briefings.
• Represent E3G in external engagements through active involvement in civil society meetings and relevant conferences and events in Japan and internationally as required; maintain relationships with media and provide insights and commentary in areas of expertise when necessary.
• A graduate degree in a pertinent field, such as trade policy, international relations, climate and energy policy, development, geography, or politics.
• At least six years of relevant professional experience in a related area, such as trade, policy, research, or advocacy within a government or international organization, commercial sector, think tank, civil society, or research institute.
• Established connections with organizations and individuals pertinent to the role, including government bodies and ministries, trade associations, or related research institutions, with the capability to effectively leverage these relationships in accordance with organizational priorities.
• Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with a capacity for absorbing new information and processing complex data to make evidence-based recommendations.
• Excellent communication abilities, capable of articulating information and arguments clearly and persuasively, even in sensitive or challenging stakeholder scenarios.
• Highly organized with a keen attention to detail, able to proactively produce high-quality outputs within deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build high-trust relationships with diverse external stakeholders and manage sensitive information discreetly, as well as demonstrating patience and resilience in long-term engagement endeavors.
• Proficient in both written and spoken Japanese and English.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in an international team setting.
• Initial contract for one year, with the possibility of extension, for a full-time position.
• Fully remote and flexible working conditions.
