This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.
• Oversee the development, execution, and implementation of medium-complexity packaging systems projects with minimal supervision.
• Conduct conceptual engineering design for packaging systems, including cost estimation, development of system and project proposals, supplier evaluations, and installation and startup of equipment and systems.
• Transition finished systems to the plant operations and maintenance teams.
• Provide technical analyses, alternatives, cost estimates, feasibility studies, specifications, and recommendations.
• Design optimal packaging solutions and offer packaging and controls support throughout project development, design, installation, checkout, commissioning, training, and transition.
• Produce system operation manuals, maintenance documentation, and technical knowledge for plant personnel.
• Identify process and manufacturing alternatives to meet new business needs or to establish functional excellence.
• Diagnose root causes through cross-functional processes and propose resolution options.
• Ensure compliance of packaging systems project implementation with corporate capital control policies and procedures.
• Foster relationships with external equipment manufacturers and suppliers to discover and develop new technologies.
• Offer technical development, scheduling, and budgeting insights during project evaluations.
• Collaborate with senior engineering colleagues on functional assessments, project scopes, equipment schedules, and capital budgets.
• Identify personal development gaps and devise growth action plans.
• Mentor and support junior engineers, enhancing their exposure to functions outside of engineering.
• Act as a subject matter expert on medium-sized, moderately complex project teams.
• Enhance the capabilities of the packaging systems team and contribute to team growth.
• Represent The Hershey Company while directing contracted project personnel, ensuring contractor and supplier compliance.
• A minimum of 4 years of significant experience in Packaging Systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology; preferred majors include Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Engineering Technology.
• Fundamental understanding of common packaging materials utilized in the food packaging sector.
• Familiarity with high-speed flow wrapping.
• Knowledge of secondary packaging, including carton and tray loading, statistical scales, and bagging equipment.
• Understanding of tertiary packaging, encompassing case packing and palletizing.
• Familiarity with machine and equipment design.
• Understanding of servo and control technology.
• Basic experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), particularly Allen-Bradley and Siemens.
• Basic experience with electrical and electronic industrial instrumentation.
• Basic experience with automation and process control.
• Basic experience with industrial computer systems and networks.
• Basic experience with distributed control systems.
• Understanding of digital and basic AI principles.
• Familiarity with other automation, electrical power, computer, and control technologies.
• Proven proficiency in AutoCAD and Excel is preferred.
• Hands-on problem-solving approach focused on detailed problem resolution and documentation.
• Ability to implement effective engineering solutions, considering costs, schedules, and operational performance.
• Ability to evaluate, communicate, and build cross-functional agreement on engineering recommendations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong PC skills.
• Ability and willingness to work effectively in a diverse, disciplined team environment with limited supervision.
