This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.
β’ Oversee the transition of the Volunteer Impact backend from VB.NET/.NET Framework to C#/.NET 10, establishing the migration strategy and implementing it incrementally on a live production system.
β’ Revamp a custom security framework (70+ custom attributes) to function effectively on the new stack, ensuring zero authorization bypasses.
β’ Enhance the current CI/CD pipeline and collaborate with our quality engineering team to integrate checks that detect functional and performance regressions prior to reaching production.
β’ Deploy migrated components to production in a standalone and incremental manner while the legacy application continues to operate.
β’ Serve as the second engineer capable of independently creating, validating, and releasing a production deployment.
β’ Identify, assess, and substitute outdated dependencies lacking a transition path to modern .NET, ensuring no functional or performance regressions are introduced.
β’ Make informed technical decisions regarding the order of migrations, timing of dependency replacements, and the feasibility of automated conversion versus manual rewrites.
β’ Establish a solid foundation for team growth by modernizing the stack to one that is accessible for any C# developer.
β’ A minimum of 8 years of professional experience with C#/.NET, demonstrating substantial expertise in the framework beyond just the latest version.
β’ Proven experience in leading or serving as the technical anchor on a migration from .NET Framework to .NET Core (or newer) of a substantial production monolith catering to paying customers.
β’ Experience in incrementally migrating a production system with minimal downtime, along with the ability to articulate the methodology you would employ in this scenario.
β’ Strong NHibernate expertise is highly preferred, as we intend to retain NHibernate to mitigate migration risks. Understanding a mature data access layer and knowing where modernization can be beneficial without unnecessary disruption is valuable.
β’ Demonstrated experience in replacing legacy dependencies in production environments, including DI containers, bundling frameworks, service hosting, and unsupported third-party libraries. Ability to swap essential components without halting operations is crucial.
β’ Practical experience with legacy .NET ecosystem components, including ASP.NET MVC-to-Core routing, custom security frameworks, and dependencies lacking a straightforward upgrade path.
β’ Familiarity with the migration of SSRS reports to a modern reporting platform is advantageous. Given our extensive reporting footprint, preserving report functionality during this transition would be beneficial.
β’ Experience in enhancing CI/CD pipelines for .NET applications and collaborating with a quality function to establish gates that catch functional and performance regressions early in the process.
β’ Comfortable working within a small core team with shared DevOps and DBA support, alongside a dedicated quality engineering partner responsible for the regression gate across our platforms. Ability to make sound technical decisions, debug issues hands-on, and know when to seek appropriate assistance is necessary.
β’ Familiarity with VB.NET is a plus, but not a requirement, as the focus of the role is on conversion rather than maintenance of VB.NET.
β’ Medical, dental & vision insurance (available after 90 days).
β’ 401(k) plan (available after 90 days).
β’ Unlimited vacation along with 9 paid holidays.
β’ Paid parental leave.
β’ Competitive compensation package.
