
Senior Legal Counsel – Product, Privacy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.
• Identify and provide guidance on legal matters in critical domains such as privacy, data protection, intellectual property, marketing, online safety, AI regulation, platform competition, and consumer laws.
• Establish strong connections with key stakeholders, offering advice on product development (including agentic and generative AI products), go-to-market strategies, partnership agreements, consumer-facing terms, and risk management.
• Contribute to the formulation and implementation of organization-wide AI policies, processes, and legal frameworks.
• Draft and uphold legal playbooks and internal guidelines pertaining to AI tools and technologies.
• Collaborate closely with teams in privacy, intellectual property, security, product development, and engineering.
• Assist in creating scalable and efficient processes for legal review to facilitate the launch of new products.
• Engage in reviewing and coordinating potential privacy or data security incidents (including being on call), which involves investigations, notifications, and other resolution activities.
• Keep abreast of global AI and privacy regulations, as well as pertinent industry standards.
• Legally qualified (AUS/NZ, UK, EU, or US practicing certificate).
• Over 10 years of legal practice experience, with some in-house experience preferred, ideally within a technology company.
• Knowledge of essential global digital, AI, privacy, consumer, and online safety laws and regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, Digital Services Act, Online Safety Act(s)).
• Profound understanding of contemporary AI technology and products.
• You have strong viewpoints on topics such as generative and agentic AI, alongside the privacy, IP, safety, and regulatory issues associated with them.
• Comfortable working collaboratively with team members across different time zones.
• A collaborative, practical, and business-oriented lawyer eager to contribute to the growth of the Canva group and be part of its exciting journey.
• You simplify complex issues and facilitate compliance without compromising on standards.
• You enjoy working with engineers, project managers, and marketers — and excel in dynamic environments.

• Bonus: AI Governance Professional and Certified Information Privacy Professional qualifications are highly valued (and a commitment to obtaining CIPP certification within six months of joining is essential).
• Familiarity with and understanding of Canva.
• High comfort level with technology and AI experimentation.
• Practical experience advising rapidly growing technology firms on privacy and product-related regulatory requirements.
