Senior Legal Counsel – Product & Privacy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Identify and provide guidance on legal matters in critical areas such as privacy, data protection, intellectual property, marketing, online safety, AI regulation, platform competition, and consumer laws.

• Establish robust relationships with key stakeholders, offering advice on product development (including agentic and generative AI products), go-to-market strategies, partnership agreements, consumer-facing terms, and risk management.

• Contribute to the formulation and implementation of comprehensive AI policies, processes, and legal frameworks across the organization.

• Create and update legal playbooks and internal guidance regarding AI tools and technologies.

• Work closely with teams in privacy, intellectual property, security, product, and engineering.

• Assist in developing scalable and efficient processes for legal review to facilitate the launch of new products.

• Engage in the assessment and coordination of potential privacy or data security incidents (including being on-call), which involves investigations, notifications, and other resolution efforts.

• Remain informed about global AI and privacy regulations as well as pertinent industry standards.


⛳️ Requirements

• Legally qualified with a practicing certificate from Australia/New Zealand, the UK, the EU, or the US.

• Over 10 years of legal practice, with some in-house experience, preferably within a technology company.

• Knowledge of key global digital, AI, privacy, consumer, and online safety laws and regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, Digital Services Act, Online Safety Act(s)).

• Profound understanding of contemporary AI technologies and products.

• You possess strong opinions on topics like generative and agentic AI, including the associated privacy, IP, safety, and regulatory considerations.

• Comfortable collaborating with team members across different time zones.

• A collaborative, pragmatic, and business-oriented lawyer eager to contribute to the growth of the Canva group and participate in its exciting journey.

• You excel at clarifying complex issues and simplifying compliance while maintaining high standards.

• Enjoy working alongside engineers, project managers, and marketers, thriving in dynamic environments.

• You are risk-aware rather than risk-averse.
