This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.
• Identify and provide guidance on legal matters in critical areas such as online content, product safety (including youth and AI), platform regulations, privacy, intellectual property, and AI regulation.
• Cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders, offering advice on product development (including Generative AI products), go-to-market strategies, and risk mitigation with a strong emphasis on safety concerns.
• Contribute to the formulation and implementation of company-wide safety policies and processes, which encompass regulatory, government, and law enforcement inquiry handling, scalable risk assessment frameworks, and regulatory monitoring, focusing on online and child safety.
• Draft and maintain legal playbooks and internal guidelines.
• Collaborate closely with teams in policy, IP, security, product, trust and safety regulatory, and engineering.
• Assist in developing scalable and efficient legal review processes to facilitate the launch of new products.
• Engage in the review and coordination of potential safety, privacy, or data security incidents (including being on call), involving investigations, notifications, and other resolution efforts.
• Keep abreast of global AI, safety, and privacy regulations along with relevant industry standards, conduct impact assessments of incoming regulations, and lead compliance projects, including annual online safety risk assessments.
• Respond to and manage incidents and escalations effectively.
• Support Canva-wide privacy and legal training and awareness initiatives.
• Help redefine the role of in-house counsel by creating tools and processes that foster continuous growth and success.
• Legally qualified with an AU/NZ practicing certificate.
• Over 8 years of legal practice with some experience in-house.
• Knowledgeable about key online safety laws and regulations, as well as privacy, platform, and consumer laws pertaining to digital products and generative AI (e.g., Digital Services Act, Online Safety Act (UK and AU), GDPR).
• A profound understanding of contemporary AI technology and products.
• Comfortable collaborating with team members across different time zones.
• A collaborative, pragmatic, and business-minded lawyer eager to support the growth of the Canva group and partake in its exciting journey.
• Ability to bring clarity to complex issues and simplify compliance without sacrificing standards.
• Enthusiastic about collaborating with engineers and project managers, thriving in dynamic environments.
• Creative, curious, and driven by impactful work.
• Experience dealing with data incidents and requests from government authorities.
• Bonus qualifications include AIGP, CIPP/E, or similar credentials, with a commitment to obtain at least one certification within six months of joining being essential.
• Familiarity and understanding of Canva.
• High comfort level with technology and AI experimentation.
• Practical experience advising rapidly growing tech companies on privacy and product-related regulatory requirements.
