Senior Lead Substation Engineer – Transmission and Distribution

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Oversee the engineering and design of transmission and distribution substation projects for utility, renewable energy, and industrial clients.

• Provide technical leadership and oversight for aspects of substation physical design, protection and control integration, grounding systems, equipment layouts, and power delivery infrastructure.

• Assist in the development and review of one-line diagrams, protection schemes, equipment specifications, construction packages, and design documentation.

• Utilize engineering expertise throughout planning, conceptual design, detailed design, procurement, and construction support phases.

• Aid in engineering studies and analyses related to grounding, equipment sizing, fault current evaluations, and substation design.

• Remain informed about technologies, industry standards, and utility practices concerning substations and grid modernization.

• Establish standards across processes and practices.

• Direct engineering tasks and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.

• Assist in project planning, resource coordination, technical reviews, and project execution.

• Provide technical oversight for substation upgrades, expansions, brownfield modifications, and greenfield projects.

• Collaborate with project managers to identify and mitigate risks.

• Support construction by providing technical consultation, design clarifications, and resolving field issues.

• Foster relationships with utility, renewable energy, and industrial clients.

• Engage in client meetings, technical workshops, presentations, and project reviews.

• Assist in proposal development, scope definition, cost estimates, and pursuit initiatives.

• Identify opportunities to broaden services and enhance client partnerships.

• Work together with regional and national teams on strategic growth initiatives.

• Mentor engineers and designers while supporting technical development and knowledge sharing.

• Collaborate with civil, structural, transmission, protection and control, and program management teams.

• Contribute to engineering best practices and initiatives for continuous improvement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with over 12 years of experience or demonstrated equivalence in experience and/or education.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.

• Experience in supporting transmission and distribution substation projects.

• Proficiency in electrical engineering principles, utility infrastructure, and power delivery systems.

• Experience in leading engineering tasks, reviewing technical deliverables, and coordinating project teams.

• Familiarity with IEEE, NESC, and NEC standards and codes.

• Proficient in engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, Aspen, CAPE, or similar tools.

• Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating in a remote environment.

• Willingness to travel periodically for project, client, and team needs.

• An advanced degree in Engineering or a related technical field is preferred.

• Strong communication, leadership, and client relationship skills are essential.

• Experience in supporting utility, renewable energy, grid modernization, or energy transition projects.

• Experience in mentoring engineers and contributing to technical leadership initiatives.

• Familiar with substation physical design, protection and control systems, SCADA integration, or related power system applications.
