This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Connecticut, +3 more states.
• Oversee the decision-making and execution of invention disclosure harvesting, patent application drafting, prosecution, subsequent filing choices, portfolio management, and overall IP strategy, collaborating closely with ABB inventors, technology leaders, and external IP counsel.
• Assist with trademark prosecution, enforcement, and portfolio strategy, including initiatives for brand protection. Provide guidance to business stakeholders on brand protection efforts.
• Draft, negotiate, and offer counsel on various IP-related agreements and clauses concerning IP ownership, IP indemnity, and more, applicable to general business transactions, strategic partnerships, university collaborations, joint development, and licensing, including software licensing.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams within ABB (e.g., General Legal, product management, sales, marketing, business IP coordinators) to deliver optimal IP services to business stakeholders.
• Engage with business stakeholders to ensure the accuracy of complex IP data, utilizing strong presentation skills and building strong relationships with business partners.
• Provide training to the business community as required, covering a range of IP topics.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school; active license to practice in at least one U.S. state; USPTO registration is mandatory.
• Over 6 years of extensive experience in intellectual property, including patent drafting and prosecution, trademarks, IP agreements, and opinion work; experience in both law firms and in-house settings is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree with a technical background relevant to pertinent technologies (e.g., electrification, industrial systems, robotics, or automation).
• Proven experience in managing patent portfolios, trademark counseling, and drafting/negotiating intricate IP agreements (including ownership, licensing, and joint development).
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with senior business and technical leaders, manage projects, deliver actionable IP strategies, and balance risks with business objectives.
• Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal effectiveness; highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of quickly learning new technologies while managing multiple priorities.
• Candidates must possess work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in the US.
