This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.
• Lead the industrial design efforts for Canopy’s next-generation vehicle security hardware, creating innovative product solutions from initial concept exploration to prototyping, validation, and mass production.
• Convert intricate technical capabilities and engineering limitations into clear, engaging hardware experiences, collaborating closely with AI, sensing, electrical, mechanical, and embedded software teams to identify our technical challenges and opportunities. Incorporate advanced sensors, processors, and custom ML models into products that remain intuitive, functional, and customer-focused.
• Advocate for a customer-centered design philosophy, collaborating with Ford and internal stakeholders to conduct user research and prototype testing, ensuring our design efforts are informed by customer insights and provide a seamless experience for users and their vehicles.
• Develop and communicate design direction through sketches, CAD models, prototypes, renders, and design narratives that assist in aligning Canopy Engineering and Ford Product teams on the right product decisions.
• Assist in the transition from prototype to mass production, collaborating with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and manufacturers on CMF and product quality expectations to maintain design integrity through to launch.
• 5–7+ years of experience in industrial design, with a proven history of developing physical products from concept to production.
• A bachelor's or master's degree in Industrial Design or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• A robust portfolio showcasing hardware product design work, illustrating how you address user needs, technical constraints, product form, and manufacturability.
• Outstanding 2D and 3D design abilities, with proficiency in sketching, digital rendering, 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred), and rapid prototyping to create clear, engaging hardware concepts.
• Excellent visual and verbal communication and storytelling skills, with the capability to transform complex ideas into clear design narratives that align design, engineering, product, and leadership teams.
• Thorough understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, with strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and the capacity to make clear recommendations while balancing customer experience, technical feasibility, cost, quality, and manufacturing realities.
• A collaborative, hands-on approach, with experience managing multiple complex workstreams in a dynamic product development setting.
