This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Lead, mentor, and cultivate a talented engineering team responsible for managing NerdWallet’s platform systems, which include the Content Platform, CMS, and Product Data Platform.
• Propel the advancement of engineering workflows by thoughtfully integrating AI-assisted development techniques, automation, and operational tools.
• Collaborate with Product Managers and various cross-functional stakeholders to strategically plan, prioritize, and implement the product roadmap.
• Advocate for process enhancements that boost engineering velocity, efficiency, and developer experience while upholding high standards of quality and reliability.
• Ensure consistent application of software development best practices, such as code quality, testing, documentation, and operational excellence.
• Contribute to and guide technical and architectural decisions, ensuring that solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and compliant with regulatory standards.
• Balance the evolution of the platform (e.g., headless CMS, APIs, content workflows) with maintaining stability for high-traffic, mission-critical systems.
• Oversee sprint planning, project timelines, and delivery commitments, ensuring predictable and quality execution.
• Identify technical risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges, proactively escalating and addressing them.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and psychological safety within the team.
• Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development initiatives for engineers at various levels.
• Ensure that systems managed by the team meet standards for availability, performance, and security.
• 8+ years of relevant experience in software engineering.
• 5+ years of experience managing an engineering team.
• Demonstrated experience delivering production software in a complex, fast-paced environment, particularly within FinTech or regulated industries.
• Proven success in owning and leading large-scale content management systems and headless architectures (our current platform utilizes WordPress).
• Demonstrated success in leading large-scale backend systems.
• Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, agile methodologies, and contemporary engineering practices.
• Solid technical foundation with experience in designing and constructing scalable, reliable, and secure systems.
• Proficient in PHP or Python, GraphQL, SQL, and TypeScript.
• Working knowledge of security best practices, data privacy, and compliance issues in financial systems.
• Proven ability to coach, mentor, and support engineers at various levels through clear and actionable feedback.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities, capable of effectively working with both technical and non-technical partners.
• Experienced in balancing delivery commitments with technical quality and long-term maintainability.
• Expertise in developing scalable web applications with SEO considerations.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities, with a proven track record of managing and delivering complex engineering projects on time and at scale.
