Senior Editor – Station Engagement

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Act as a liaison between local and national journalism by cultivating robust editorial partnerships with station affiliates, their reporters, and the Marketplace newsroom.

• Work in conjunction with stations and Marketplace editors to determine coverage priorities, editorial initiatives, and special projects that enhance Marketplace's regional reporting presence.

• Create, oversee, and edit collaborative programming projects with stations, including regional business reports, multichannel content, and joint events that showcase local economic narratives.

• Strategically plan, negotiate, and allocate coverage to ensure timely and pertinent reports for Marketplace programs and collaborative projects.

• Collaborate with digital and social media teams to produce engaging, multi-platform content, which includes digital adaptations of reporting projects and regional campaigns.

• Assign, edit, and refine multichannel elements that uphold Marketplace’s high standards for originality, clarity, and insight.

• Provide editorial support, guidance, and reporting resources to stations that have limited dedicated business or economic reporting.

• Conduct regular editorial meetings with station content leaders to brainstorm story ideas and shared projects, ensuring a steady stream of high-quality content originating from stations for Marketplace programs.

• Facilitate virtual reporter roundtables with Marketplace journalists to examine how national economic trends manifest regionally.

• Collaborate with APM Distribution to broaden APM’s digital underwriting network, thereby enhancing revenue opportunities for stations.

• Manage and communicate production timelines, deadlines, and editorial strategies for assigned elements.

• Respond swiftly to breaking news and proactively plan for forthcoming economic trends and events.

• Ensure that all work adheres to Marketplace’s journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, balance, and editorial excellence.

• When necessary, supervise team members by providing clear editorial direction, coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to enhance staff skills.

• Promote a creative, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.

• Demonstrate strong editorial judgment and production leadership, especially under tight deadlines.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• At least ten years of experience in editing, reporting, producing, or similar journalistic roles.

• A minimum of five years in supervisory or management positions, showcasing the ability to establish and maintain high editorial standards while effectively leading, inspiring, and developing teams.

• Proven leadership skills, including coaching, team management, and talent development.

• Exceptional editorial judgment and a strong commitment to accuracy, fairness, and editorial integrity.

• Capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a high-performing newsroom.

• Advanced editing skills that can shape nuanced and multi-layered coverage of economic and financial issues.

• Strong aptitude for developing compelling story ideas, managing assignments, and editing for both broadcast and digital platforms.

• Demonstrated ability to produce national-quality journalism within deadlines.

• Strong decision-making capabilities in evaluating credibility, narrative significance, and newsworthiness.

• Proficient in building and sustaining strong working relationships with staff, contributors, and freelance reporters.

• Ability to motivate, mentor, and develop both early-career and seasoned journalists.

• Strong critical reading, analytical, and listening capabilities.

• Deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of public radio.

• Excellent communication and team-building skills, along with the ability to resolve conflicts and enhance team culture.
