This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.
• Lead the design and enhancement of epitaxial stacks for VCSEL and associated photonic device frameworks.
• Convert device-level specifications into effective epitaxial designs by employing advanced semiconductor physics and numerical simulations.
• Create and improve device and epitaxy simulation models (e.g., optical cavity/mode simulations, carrier transport, thermal behavior).
• Collaborate closely with epitaxy, processing, and device characterization teams to establish experiments and design of experiments (DOEs).
• Analyze measurement and reliability data, iterating designs based on feedback from wafer- and device-level outcomes.
• Contribute to device architecture and development plans, including roadmaps for performance, reliability, and manufacturability enhancements.
• Examine and correlate simulation, epitaxial, and device performance data to uncover root causes and optimization avenues.
• Prepare and deliver technical reports, design reviews, and development status updates for internal stakeholders.
• Engage in a multi-disciplinary, international R&D setting.
• Provide mentorship to junior engineers and students on semiconductor device physics topics.
• PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Significant professional experience with a proven history of impactful contributions and increasing responsibilities in R&D or applied academic research, preferably involving collaboration with industry partners or engagement in translational initiatives.
• Strong background in semiconductor devices, ideally specializing in photonic devices such as lasers, LEDs, or VCSELs.
• Comprehensive understanding of semiconductor physics, which includes: Heterostructures and quantum wells, Optical cavities and resonant structures, Carrier transport, recombination mechanisms, and thermal effects.
• Proficient in simulations of devices or epitaxial stacks, for instance: Optical mode/cavity simulations, Electronic band structure and carrier confinement, Thermal/electro-thermal simulations.
• Excellent ability to interpret experimental data (e.g., I-V, L-I, spectral, far-field, lifetime/reliability data) and relate results to physical mechanisms and design decisions.
• Proficient in English (both spoken and written), with the capability to create clear technical documentation and convey complex subjects to diverse audiences.
• Willingness and ability to work partially in EU time zones to facilitate effective collaboration with European teams.
• Health insurance
• 401(k) matching
• Paid time off
