Senior Database Engineer, PostgreSQL/AWS Aurora

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the PostgreSQL and AWS Aurora expert for Skye’s operational database.

• Oversee and enhance a substantial relational schema featuring hundreds of tables, high-volume operational data, and significant historical data.

• Assess database modifications for accuracy, performance, security, indexing, grants, triggers, foreign keys, and migration practices.

• Diagnose and prioritize production database issues, such as slow queries, lock contention, blocking transactions, runaway queries, replication lag, and performance degradations.

• Optimize query performance and indexing for extensive tables, reporting tasks, assignment/routing workflows, mobile API payloads, and internal operational dashboards.

• Automate routine database maintenance and operational duties, including repacking, cleanup, monitoring checks, and periodic reports.

• Assist with database refresh, backup, restore, staging, and release processes in collaboration with the Infrastructure team.

• Work alongside Infrastructure, Software Development, and Data Science teams to address reliability, performance, reporting, analytics, and operational data requirements.

• Ensure secure access protocols for reporting users, Metabase, developers, and sensitive/PII-bearing tables.

• Handle accounting-related data flows, encompassing invoices, payments, billing accounts, vendor/payee information, and ERP integration tables.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience with production relational databases (8+ years preferred).

• Extensive experience in PostgreSQL, particularly with AWS Aurora PostgreSQL.

• Proficient SQL skills, including joins, CTEs, query plans, indexes, constraints, triggers, transactions, and lock behavior.

• Experience in analyzing high-volume databases with large tables, long-lived schemas, and real production loads.

• Ability to differentiate between intrinsic query costs and issues like lock contention, blocking, poor plans, missing indexes, and application call volumes.

• Strong attention to detail when evaluating schema migrations and operational changes.

• Experience collaborating with application engineers on database-backed application design and performance optimization.

• Sound judgment regarding access control, PII, production safety, and release risks.

• Clear written communication skills for documenting findings, trade-offs, and suggested solutions.

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a software-related field is preferred.

• A Master's degree is a plus.

• Familiarity with Linux, Bash, scripting, cron, or other orchestration/automation tools for database maintenance and operational workflows (highly desirable).

• Java experience, especially in applications utilizing MyBatis, Spring, or similar data access frameworks (highly desirable).

• Experience with reporting tasks, BI tools, Metabase-style access patterns, PostGIS, or geospatial query optimization (highly desirable).

• Familiarity with AWS monitoring tools, including CloudWatch, RDS/Aurora Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, pgAdmin, or similar observability tools (highly desirable).

• Experience with AI coding agents like Codex, Claude, or similar tools; at minimum, openness to using AI-assisted development tools in daily engineering tasks (highly desirable).

• Experience with NetSuite, Boomi, ERP/iPaaS integrations, accounting, billing, AR/AP, payments, invoices, credit memos, customer deposits, vendor payments, or working-table integration patterns (secondary bonus).
