Senior Data Scientist, NLP – Applied AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Design and create NLP enrichment pipelines that extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries from scientific full-text on a large scale.

• Evaluate and compare traditional NLP methods, embedding-based retrieval, LLM prompting, and fine-tuned smaller models.

• Determine suitable approaches based on evaluation metrics, costs, and operational trade-offs.

• Take ownership of evaluation by developing golden sets in collaboration with subject matter experts and vendors.

• Select appropriate metrics to balance speed, quality, and cost effectively.

• Contribute to the development of agentic AI applications that reason over enriched scientific corpora.

• Influence how agents substantiate and validate their responses.

• Collaborate closely with editors, product managers, and engineers.

• Integrate modeling insights into product-related decisions.

• Translate stakeholder feedback into actionable modeling tasks.

• Write code, oversee evaluations, implement production changes, and remain accountable for results.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in NLP, encompassing modern techniques such as LLMs, transformers, embeddings, and retrieval methods.

• Solid background in classical NLP approaches, including Named Entity Recognition (NER), classification, and sequence labeling.

• Proven experience in creating evaluations and learning from the results obtained.

• Proficient in Python programming.

• Comfortable working within exploratory notebooks as well as production repositories.

• Ability to assess various approaches and identify the most appropriate tool based on evaluation, cost, and operational trade-offs.

• Prior experience with scientific or scholarly texts is preferred.

• Familiarity with AWS services, including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker is preferred.

• Knowledge of Parquet or Iceberg data lake patterns is preferred.

• Experience managing LLMs under real cost and latency constraints in production settings is preferred.

• Exposure to agentic AI applications, including tool utilization, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation is preferred.
