Senior Data Center Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Implementing, managing, and enhancing DigitalOcean’s data center infrastructure.

• Installing, organizing, and connecting servers, power distribution units (PDUs), and network switches.

• Setting up and commissioning servers, networking devices, storage solutions, and GPU infrastructure.

• Planning and executing large-scale infrastructure deployments, including rack buildouts and cluster expansions.

• Assisting new data center constructions and expansions by planning rack layouts and validating infrastructure readiness.

• Deploying and resolving issues with high-density compute platforms, including GPU and liquid-cooled infrastructure.

• Identifying and fixing hardware problems across servers, networking devices, and storage systems.

• Troubleshooting hardware, network, and Linux OS-related issues.

• Submitting RMAs and overseeing hardware lifecycle replacements with equipment vendors.

• Managing the shipping, receiving, and inventory tracking of data center hardware and components.

• Keeping deployment documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures up to date.

• Collaborating with internal engineering teams to facilitate hardware rollouts and infrastructure upgrades.

• Ensuring operational readiness for new data center launches.

• Participating in an on-call rotation to maintain infrastructure availability.

• Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team development.


⛳️ Requirements

• 6-8+ years of experience in deploying, operating, or supporting infrastructure in large-scale data centers or cloud environments.

• In-depth understanding of data center infrastructure, including compute, networking, and storage systems.

• Proficient knowledge of data center power and cooling systems.

• Experience in deploying and troubleshooting GPU hardware and high-density compute infrastructure.

• Background in working with or supporting liquid-cooled infrastructure.

• Strong Linux expertise and command line experience; familiarity with bash scripting.

• Excellent troubleshooting skills across hardware, networking, and operating systems.

• Knowledge of data center cabling standards and deployment best practices.

• Experience in supporting large-scale infrastructure deployments or data center expansions.

• Ability to analyze infrastructure incidents and implement operational improvements.

• Strong problem-solving capabilities and aptitude for conducting in-depth technical investigations.

• Experience in maintaining deployment documentation and operational procedures.

• Capacity to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.

• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (20–25%).

• Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.

• Capacity to mentor and train junior engineers.
