Senior Counsel – Employment Products

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of and manage employment templates, policies, and processes across various jurisdictions, ensuring that Oyster's employment offerings remain compliant, scalable, and operationally efficient.

• Keep track of global legislative and regulatory changes, evaluate their impact on Oyster's products and operations, and facilitate the implementation of necessary adjustments.

• Collaborate closely with the Product and People teams, along with other cross-functional partners, to design and execute compliant employment solutions that align legal requirements with business goals.

• Provide guidance on a wide array of employment law and compliance issues throughout the employee lifecycle, encompassing hiring, compensation, leave, performance management, and terminations.

• Assist in strategic initiatives such as Direct Expansion, transitions from indirect to direct employment, and the introduction of new employment products and features.

• Investigate intricate employment law issues and convert legal analysis into clear, practical, and business-oriented recommendations.

• Create and maintain employment guides, knowledge resources, and compliance documentation to support scalable operations across Oyster's global presence.

• Aid in labor inspections, audits, regulatory inquiries, and other employment compliance efforts.

• Utilize data, stakeholder feedback, and operational insights to pinpoint risks, enhance processes, and improve the efficiency of Oyster's employment compliance framework.

• Identify and advocate for opportunities to employ AI, automation, and process innovations to boost team efficiency, minimize manual tasks, and support the scalable delivery of employment compliance and legal assistance.

• Contribute to a highly collaborative, remote-first team environment and foster ongoing improvement across Employment Products.


⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree and admission to practice law in one or more jurisdictions.

• Over 4 years of experience practicing employment law, ideally with a blend of law firm and in-house experience.

• Extensive knowledge in employment law, including hands-on engagement with standard employment processes: drafting and reviewing contracts, managing templates and policies, advising on a broad range of employment matters, and interpreting local labor regulations across multiple jurisdictions.

• Familiarity with the Employer of Record (EOR) model and the ability to anticipate and navigate its distinct legal complexities; previous experience with or within an EOR is advantageous.

• Experience overseeing multi-jurisdictional and/or cross-border employment issues, with the capacity to work across diverse legal systems and regulatory frameworks.

• Strong business acumen with the capability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, practical, and actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders; creativity and pragmatism in risk management are crucial.

• Outstanding analytical, communication, and research abilities, with a sharp attention to detail and the capability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global setting.

• A tech-savvy mindset, including curiosity and proficiency in utilizing AI and automation tools to enhance efficiency and continuously refine legal processes.

• A positive demeanor and a readiness to assist others, regardless of how minor the task may be.

• A reliable home internet connection.

• Proficiency in both written and spoken English.
