Senior BESS Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +43 more states.

📋 Description

• Act as the technical subject matter expert for BESS engineering scopes.

• Oversee and direct BESS design and engineering, ensuring adherence to contracts, utility guidelines, and AHJ regulations.

• Evaluate feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses.

• Contribute expertise across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and high-voltage engineering areas.

• Supervise Engineers of Record and collaborate with third-party engineering partners.

• Liaise with fire protection engineers and local fire departments/AHJs.

• Create and assess technical specifications, drawings, and documentation necessary for procurement.

• Provide technical oversight throughout the procurement process, including vendor recommendations and drawing evaluations.

• Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors to design, procure, install, and commission BESS systems.

• Manage system modeling, simulation, and analysis tasks.

• Offer engineering support during construction activities, addressing field issues, design clarifications, and minor redesigns.

• Assist in testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization of systems.

• Mentor junior engineers and project teams.

• Stay updated with industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements.

• Support business development through proposals, presentations, and technical consultations.

• Represent SOLV Engineering in meetings with customers and clients.

• Engage in regular team meetings and calls.

• Travel as necessary to facilitate project execution.

• Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

• Over 5 years of electrical engineering experience, focusing on BESS, renewables, or power systems.

• Proficient in the design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems, including lithium-ion batteries, inverters, BMS, and grid interconnection equipment.

• In-depth knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software.

• Expertise in power system analysis (PSS/E, PSCAD, etc.) and simulation tools.

• Technical subject matter expertise in NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, and utility standards.

• Extensive experience with grid operations and regulatory frameworks, including FERC Order 841 and IEEE 1547.

• Strong understanding of fire protection standards, including UL9540, UL9540A, and NFPA855.

• Comprehensive knowledge of SCADA and Energy Management Systems communication protocols, including IEC 61850.

• Proven project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.

• Familiarity with EPC engineering workflows, design deliverables, submittals, document control, and coordination with engineering partners.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

• Capability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, adjust to changing project requirements, and deliver exceptional results within tight deadlines.
