Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby – AI Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Develop, deliver, and maintain features and enhancements for Agentic Tools within the GitLab monolith backend in a secure, thoroughly tested, and high-performance manner.

• Collaborate with Product Management, UX, frontend and backend developers, as well as AI experts to clarify requirements and produce high-quality, iterative improvements to the product.

• Design, implement, and evaluate GraphQL and REST APIs along with associated backend logic, ensuring dependability, scalability, and well-defined contracts with frontend clients.

• Enhance and expand automated testing, encompassing RSpec and other frameworks, to boost quality, reliability, and developer feedback loops.

• Share best practices, patterns, and insights with fellow engineers, elevating the standards for responsible AI integration and evidence-based engineering within the team.

• Engage in Tier 2 on-call rotations to resolve production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability and resilience.

• Maintain a keen awareness of the competitive landscape, assisting us in understanding what is necessary to keep GitLab’s MCP server top-notch in an increasingly agentic environment.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building and maintaining production applications with Ruby on Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.

• Comfortable working throughout the stack within a mature codebase, with familiarity in Python backends and/or Vue frontends considered a plus.

• Expertise in designing or enhancing REST and/or GraphQL APIs, with a focus on scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility.
