Senior Backend Engineer, Prefect Cloud

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of significant distributed systems within Prefect Cloud, encompassing orchestration, APIs, data pathways, and services that ensure platform reliability at scale.

• Leverage expertise in query-engine and data-processing to strategize, implement, partition, transfer, and monitor workflows across the platform.

• Illuminate technical trade-offs and decide when to either prototype or solidify solutions.

• Engage directly with product, customer, enterprise, and GTM contexts; articulate problems in settings lacking a dedicated PM for each project.

• Utilize AI-driven development tools throughout planning, implementation, review, testing, and iterative processes.

• Write maintainable code, prioritize reliability, participate in on-call and incident response, and enhance owned systems over time.

• Offer design insights, conduct code reviews, mentor others, and communicate effectively in writing.

⛳️ Requirements

• Senior-level experience in back-end or systems engineering, particularly with large-scale distributed systems in production.

• Significant experience in designing, constructing, or substantially extending a query engine, analytical database, streaming system, or distributed data-processing runtime.

• Strong foundation in computer science and distributed systems, covering aspects like concurrency, consistency, performance, reliability, and fault tolerance.

• Proficient and willing to write production Python; previous systems experience may include Python, Rust, Go, C++, Java, or another relevant language.

• Strong product instincts and adaptability in a small, agile, low-process environment without a dedicated PM.

• Demonstrated curiosity, self-motivation, and increasing ownership of complex challenges.

• Effective utilization of AI-enhanced engineering tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or similar workflows.

• Capability to articulate trade-offs clearly through both writing and discussion, guiding engineers through review and design processes.

• Exposure to full-stack or product engineering is advantageous.
