Senior Backend Engineer, Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and manage the connector and adapter layer, enabling providers to be added or swapped through configuration and lightweight adapters.

• Transition payment methods from redirect flows to server-to-server and embedded flows where applicable, while measuring outcomes.

• Handle downstream orchestration responsibilities, including reconciliation, transaction status management, method configuration, and payment flows into the client portal.

• Ensure transaction status reliability from start to finish through active status polling, idempotent processing, and reconciliation efforts.

• Implement observability for transaction status and provider performance throughout the system.

• Define, design, advocate for, and review the behavior of the orchestration platform, encompassing transaction state machines, idempotency, polling, routing, and cascading rules.

• Assist with integration tasks related to the card program.

• Expand the integration set for acquired entities via configuration rather than requiring new builds.

• Take ownership of the integration codebase, enhance transaction status handling, and deliver the initial server-to-server integration.

• Establish the adapter layer, onboard providers accordingly, and ensure transaction status and provider performance are observable.

• Oversee the migration to server-to-server and embedded flows across various payment methods.

• Collaborate with a Systems Analyst as the team expands while maintaining ownership of integration engineering.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in backend engineering.

• Proficient in TypeScript and Node.js.

• Comfortable working with relational databases.

• Hands-on experience with payment systems, including authorization, callbacks, refunds, reconciliation, and retry behavior.

• Solid understanding of idempotency, asynchronous status management, transaction state machines, and designing for partial failures.

• Experience integrating third-party APIs of varying quality, including direct collaboration with a provider's integration team.

• Capability to take ownership of a service, including making architectural decisions, setting standards, and addressing root causes.

• Proficiency in English and Russian at a working communicative level.

• Familiarity with .NET for work related to the client portal is a significant advantage.

• Experience with APM and local payment rails in Asia, Africa, or LATAM, beyond just card transactions, is highly beneficial.

• Knowledge of bank transfer rails, virtual accounts, QR-based payment methods, and mobile money is a notable plus.

• Practical experience with event-driven patterns in production, such as transactional outbox, idempotent consumers, and sagas is a considerable advantage.

• Background in brokerage, cryptocurrency payments, orchestration, or another high-volume payment environment is a significant plus.

• Regular use of AI tools in daily tasks is a valuable advantage.

• Ability to work independently and make decisions without frequent oversight is a significant benefit.

• A proactive attitude and readiness to suggest improvements, fixes, and new strategies is a notable plus.
