Senior Backend Engineer – Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Cyprus, +5 more countries.

📋 Description

• Develop and manage the connector and adapter layer, enabling providers to be added or substituted through configuration and lightweight adapters.

• Transition payment methods from redirect flows to server-to-server and embedded flows wherever applicable, and assess the outcomes.

• Oversee reconciliation, transaction status management, method configuration, and payment flows within the client portal downstream from the orchestration layer.

• Ensure reliable transaction status tracking from start to finish via active polling, idempotent processing, and reconciliation.

• Implement observability for transaction status and provider performance.

• Define and evaluate the behavior of the orchestration platform, including transaction state machines, idempotency, polling, routing, and cascading rules.

• Assist with integration efforts for the card program.

• Broaden the integration set to acquired entities through configuration rather than requiring new builds.

• Take ownership of the integration codebase, enhance transaction status management, and deliver a first server-to-server integration.

• Establish the adapter layer, launch providers on it, and enable visibility into transaction status and provider performance.

• Spearhead the transition to server-to-server and embedded flows across payment methods, while expanding integrations to other entities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in backend engineering, with strong skills in TypeScript and Node.js, and familiarity with relational databases.

• Practical experience with payment systems, including authorization, callbacks, refunds, reconciliation, and retry behaviors.

• Solid understanding of idempotency, asynchronous status management, transaction state machines, and design considerations for partial failures.

• Experience in integrating third-party APIs of varying quality, including direct collaboration with a provider's integration team to address gaps in documentation.

• Capability to take ownership of a service, encompassing architecture decisions, standards, and root cause resolutions.

• Proficiency in English and Russian at a working communicative level.

• Exposure to .NET for tasks related to the client portal.

• Familiarity with APM and local payment rails in regions such as Asia, Africa, or LATAM beyond just card transactions.

• Experience with bank transfer systems, virtual accounts, QR-based payment methods, mobile money, and similar solutions.

• Practical application of event-driven patterns in production, including transactional outbox, idempotent consumers, and sagas.

• Background in brokerage, crypto payments, orchestration, or another high-volume payments setting, either from the provider side, at a PSP, gateway, or payment company.

• Regular use of AI tools in day-to-day tasks.

• Ability to work autonomously and make decisions without constant supervision.

• A proactive approach with a willingness to suggest enhancements, fixes, and new methodologies.
