Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Mexico, +2 more countries.

📋 Description

• Enhance backend systems, tools, and practices utilized by other engineering teams.

• Create features as needed as a member of the platform team.

• Spot automation possibilities in engineering workflows and develop solutions using AI agents where beneficial.

• Construct and uphold shared services, libraries, and APIs.

• Support dependent teams through mentorship, documentation, and code reviews.

• Manage security fixes and dependency updates across backend systems.

• Assess vulnerabilities and carefully plan and implement upgrades within an existing codebase.

• Recognize and diagnose performance bottlenecks and scalability constraints.

• Analyze concurrency, failure modes, and reliability across APIs and integrations.

• Oversee services in production, including monitoring, debugging, performance, and reliability efforts.

• Investigate incidents to determine root causes and apply appropriate fixes.

• Contribute to an AI-first engineering culture by sharing best practices and documenting effective strategies.

• Utilize AI tools to expedite implementation while thoroughly evaluating generated outputs.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience with Java.

• Proven history of delivering and managing production systems.

• Strong skills in system design and architectural decision-making.

• Solid backend knowledge, including API design, integrations, concurrency, failure modes, and service reliability.

• In-depth understanding of database behavior, data modeling, query design, indexing, and performance considerations.

• Demonstrated ability to identify performance bottlenecks and troubleshoot complex production issues to their root cause.

• Comfortable navigating an existing, evolving codebase and implementing safe incremental changes.

• Hands-on experience with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Augment, or similar.

• Capability to critically assess AI-generated code regarding logic, security, and maintainability.

• Strong technical communication skills and ability to engage in constructive disagreement.

• Interest in Elixir or other functional programming languages.

• Experience in developing B2B SaaS products, ideally with complex multi-tenant data models or transactional workflows.

• Experience working in small, high-output teams.

• Familiarity with frontend development and JavaScript/TypeScript; knowledge of Angular or modern JavaScript frameworks is a plus.

• Experience on a platform, internal tooling, or developer-enablement team, including security patching and dependency upgrades.

• Background in the travel, hospitality, or experiences industry is advantageous.
