Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Lead the end-to-end delivery of extensive backend features.

• Decompose large projects into actionable plans, assess workloads, and identify risks promptly.

• Direct the technical design for intricate features while assessing performance, maintainability, and cost trade-offs.

• Document technical choices and design for future extensibility.

• Own a significant product segment or complete service, focusing on reliability, performance, and growth.

• Develop and manage Python services, APIs, and MongoDB data structures.

• Deploy and maintain systems using Kubernetes on GCP and Azure.

• Troubleshoot and resolve medium-to-large scale production issues.

• Determine root causes and lead response and recovery efforts.

• Enhance monitoring, observability, and performance health metrics.

• Conduct code and design reviews, providing constructive feedback.

• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers effectively.

• Collaborate with product teams on medium-to-large features and influence product decisions.

• Create technical documents and convey complex topics to non-technical audiences.

• Actively resolve obstacles for team members and make pragmatic trade-offs between speed and quality.

• Contribute to shaping team culture and engineering methodologies.

• Engage with an AI-supported development workflow and assist in building necessary tools.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience in building and operating production backend systems.

• In-depth knowledge across various areas of a backend stack.

• Proficiency in Python as the primary server-side language is preferred.

• Experience with API design, data modeling, and automated testing.

• Proven history of delivering large features from start to finish with moderate unknowns.

• Experience taking ownership of a service or major product area in production with a focus on reliability and performance.

• Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities for medium-to-large issues.

• Comfortable with on-call responsibilities for managed systems.

• Familiarity with infrastructure, security, observability, CI/CD, and deployment practices.

• Experience in mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

• Proven ability to provide high-quality code review feedback.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Capable of producing comprehensive technical documents.

• Ability to clarify trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

• Willingness to utilize and become proficient in AI-assisted development.

• Preferred: Knowledge of Python, MongoDB, Kubernetes, GCP, or Azure.

• Preferred: Experience with React/TypeScript.

• Preferred: Background in B2B SaaS or enterprise software.

• Preferred: Experience in logistics, supply chain, or the energy/fuel sector.

• Preferred: Experience with performance and scalability in handling large data volumes, including query optimization, caching, and profiling.

• Preferred: AI engineering experience with production agentic systems and ML/operations models.
