Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.

📋 Description

• Develop high-quality backend software, taking complete ownership from feature planning to ensuring production stability.

• Create and implement backend services using PHP/Laravel, ensuring clear domain boundaries and maintainable business logic.

• Manage MongoDB schemas, indexes, query performance, and execute safe zero-downtime migrations for multi-tenant workloads.

• Construct resilient asynchronous, event-driven workflows utilizing SQS-based queues, jobs, and retries.

• Oversee API contracts, schema evolution, backward compatibility, and planning for deprecation.

• Design secure tenant isolation, establish authorization boundaries, manage sensitive-data handling, auditability, secrets management, and ensure privacy compliance.

• Implement and manage integrations with Twilio, Stripe, PayPal, Google, Outlook, and SIS/CRM systems.

• Enhance performance and cost-effectiveness at scale, addressing query patterns, N+1 issues, payload sizes, and tenant-level production behaviors.

• Create unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.

• Deploy safely using feature flags, monitor production services with Sentry and CloudWatch, and address issues from the shared triage queue.

• Lead technical design discussions, communicate architectural trade-offs, refine code and designs through reviews, mentor engineers, coordinate changes across teams, and convert incidents into systemic enhancements.

• Thoughtfully apply company-approved AI development tools; review, test, and take full responsibility for AI-assisted outputs.

• Share effective AI development practices with the wider team.

• Engage in live, interactive technical interviews to demonstrate work, reasoning, and use of AI tools.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional backend engineering experience, with substantial time spent at or near a Senior level in a complex, multi-tenant SaaS environment.

• Profound expertise in PHP and Laravel, including service and domain design, asynchronous and queue primitives, and scalability performance.

• Familiarity with TypeScript/Node.js, especially NestJS, is preferred.

• Strong data modeling capabilities, preferably with MongoDB, encompassing schema and index design, query performance, and tenancy considerations.

• Experience in building asynchronous, event-driven systems using SQS-based queuing or similar technologies, with knowledge in idempotency, retries, and failure modes.

• Practical AWS experience with ECS/Fargate, Lambda, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, and S3 as a service owner.

• Experience designing and versioning APIs utilized by other teams and customers.

• GraphQL experience is advantageous.

• Experience in implementing third-party API integrations, including authentication, retries, and reconciliation.

• Automated testing experience across layers; familiarity with Playwright or similar end-to-end testing tools is a plus.

• Strong judgment regarding AI integration; production experience with OpenAI APIs or comparable LLM platforms is advantageous.

• Current hands-on proficiency with agentic AI development tools throughout the entire lifecycle, such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or equivalent tools.

• Excellent written communication skills for creating technical documents and pull request descriptions.
