Senior Associate, Strategic Communications – Germany Desk Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Designing and executing the desk strategy, translating overarching network directives into actionable objectives and tactics, ensuring alignment across various work-streams, and pinpointing long-term gaps to address through strategic initiatives and immediate communication opportunities;

• Collaborating with the team to closely monitor political and media discussions in Germany to identify where strategic communications can be effectively utilized on key and intersecting topics related to climate and energy policy, and aligning delivery accordingly;

• Implementing communication strategies through a diverse range of materials and actions (this may include press pitches, media briefings, identifying spokespeople and influencers, building alliances, and sharing skills) and executing impactful interventions in line with core objectives;

• Co-developing and rolling out campaigns around significant political events across various platforms, coordinating with in-house insights and digital specialists, managing relationships with multipliers, and curating editorial content;

• Tailoring audience-specific messaging and materials, ensuring uniformity across all communication channels and platforms;

• Engaging in proactive crisis communications planning, formulating strategies and responses for potential challenges or setbacks that could affect climate initiatives, while collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders to manage risks;

• Evaluating impact and outcomes, tracking media mentions, and contributing to conclusions and recommendations for continuous improvement of interventions;

• Offering expert advice to other teams and external partners on communication strategies, trends, and tactics, and actively engaging with key stakeholders to achieve significant outcomes;

• Identifying, training, and promoting voices and spokespeople who can authentically and convincingly discuss climate and transition-related issues;

• Leading the Germany desk team members, establishing clear objectives, providing ongoing feedback, and supporting professional growth, fostering a high-performing, collaborative, and accountable team environment;

• Overseeing the desk budget, aligning resource distribution with strategic priorities, consistently monitoring expenditures, anticipating needs, and making informed spending choices to ensure the efficient use of resources across projects and infrastructure;

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive professional background in communications, public affairs, or journalism, with a proven record of impactful communication interventions in Germany. Prior experience in climate, energy, or civil society fields is an advantage;

• A passion for tackling complex topics, identifying gaps in existing structures and approaches, and strategically planning and delivering timely interventions;

• A robust understanding of the processes and dynamics of national policy-making and Germany’s broader influence within the EU, along with a keen insight into power dynamics among political parties;

• High familiarity with the German media landscape, including traditional media, online platforms, and the digital creator scene - existing contacts are highly desirable;

• A solid understanding of how misinformation and platform dynamics influence public perception of critical political issues;

• A passion for strategic story placement with a proactive approach to content development;

• An outgoing personality to leverage a vibrant network of influential sector experts and voices from think tanks, civil society, academia, and business, along with the ability to forge new meaningful connections and expand the network;

• Native-level proficiency in written and spoken German is essential, with fluency in English, our working language, expected;

• A willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers;

• The versatile and adaptable skills required to thrive in a fast-paced and diverse work environment, working across time zones using tools like Zoom, Slack, and Google Suite;
