Senior Applied AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colombia.

📋 Description

• Design and build AI systems in production that address real business problems, from discovery to operation.

• Collaborate with product and operations teams to translate ambiguous issues into defined, measurable, and maintainable solutions.

• Develop data pipelines that feed both models and product interfaces.

• Create rigorous evaluation systems: how we measure quality, how we detect regressions, and how we decide when something is ready to ship.

• Integrate LLMs into production, addressing all associated challenges: serious prompt engineering, tool utilization, cost and latency management, and output quality control.

• Make technical decisions regarding the type of solution to apply to each problem. Not everything requires an LLM, not everything needs ML, and part of the role is to know how to differentiate.

• Design and implement system security safeguards: autonomy limits, human approvals, client isolation, and auditing.

• Collaborate with the backend team to define clean contracts and integrations between services.

• Mentor other engineers in applied AI practices as the team grows (with increasing responsibility based on seniority).

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in English at a B2 level or higher.

• Over 6 years of total experience, with more than 3 years working on ML/AI systems in production environments.

• More than 4 years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years developing and maintaining Machine Learning or AI systems in production (beyond notebooks or proof of concepts).

• Practical experience building LLM systems in production: serious prompt engineering, function calling/tool use, RAG, cost and latency management, and output evaluation.

• Solid knowledge of at least one strong language for AI systems — Python is the most common, but we also consider strong profiles in Go, Rust, or TypeScript/Node, provided you have experience building productive ML/AI systems in that stack.

• Experience with at least one ML framework (PyTorch, scikit-learn, JAX, or equivalent).

• Ability to take an ambiguous product problem and translate it into a defined, measurable, and maintainable AI system.

• Evaluation-first mindset: you understand that an AI system without metrics is not a system, it's a gamble.

• Experience designing data pipelines at scale (event-driven messaging systems, batch processing, or equivalent).

• You have led at least one end-to-end AI system in production, from discovery to operation.

• Experience with AI system observability: distributed tracing, quality metrics, drift detection.

• Demonstrated ability to influence architectural decisions that cross teams.

• Experience evaluating and choosing between models, providers, and architectures (when to use fine-tuning vs prompting vs classic models, when to select a commercial provider vs open source, when to use agents vs pipelines).

• Formal mentorship of other AI engineers and defining team practices.

• Ability to communicate technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences, in both Spanish and English.
