Secondary Science Substitute Teacher

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Certified Substitute Teachers will provide virtual support for the learning program of students enrolled in Connections Academy schools across the nation, all from their secure and distraction-free home office.

• The Substitute Teacher will frequently consult with students, Learning Coaches, and school personnel using the telephone, Internet, and various curriculum tools to ensure that every child successfully completes their instructional program.

• As the Washington Secondary Science Substitute Teacher, you will serve as the teacher of record at various Connections Academy schools during periods of short- or long-term absences or vacancies, which can range from 2 to 20 weeks, with an average assignment duration of 8 to 12 weeks.

• During assignments, you will be expected to be online and available to students, parents, and school staff Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school's time zone to: Communicate regularly with parents, students, and other educators to develop and update individualized learning plans and schedules, provide feedback on student work, suggest instructional strategies, monitor assignment completion, and verify student learning.

• You will be responsible for completing all grading, generating progress reports, and conducting parent conferences promptly, as directed by the school.

• The instructional program will be supported through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous web conferencing sessions (LiveLessons).

• You will assist students and parents with alternative instructional strategies and help with daily assignments and projects.

• It is essential to keep student records and data current, including cumulative files, online student and family information, attendance records, and student logs.

• Collaborate with counselors and special educators to meet individual student needs, providing regular updates on student behavior and activities in the classroom.

• When not on assignment, actively check email to stay informed of upcoming assignments and essential updates from Substitute Services.

• Monthly meetings via video conferencing software with an assigned Substitute Services supervisor are required, whether you are on or off assignment.

• You will need to complete required professional learning tailored to individual needs throughout the year.

• Maintain your active certifications.

• Substitutes must possess high qualifications and be certified to teach Science in Washington.

• Holding multiple state certifications is an advantage.

• Ability to obtain certification in other states upon request.

• Capacity to obtain additional clearances as required.

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher is necessary.

• A dedicated, distraction-free home working environment where all business activities will occur is essential.

• When on assignment, availability is required Monday through Friday during assigned school hours (typically 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school’s time zone) for long-term assignments.

• Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial.

• Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment that demands significant flexibility, effective task prioritization, self-direction, and creativity.

• Understanding of IEP/504 plans and their implementation in a virtual setting is necessary.

• Strong attention to detail, along with excellent time management and organizational skills, is required.

• A demonstrated commitment to student achievement is essential.

• Proficient technology skills (experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office programs, and Google Apps is preferred).

• Reliable, high-speed internet access is required.

• A Microsoft OS- and Microsoft Office-equipped computer is mandatory (PC preferred).

• A customer-focused approach and a proven track record as a team player are necessary.

• It is required that you do not provide care for others during normal school hours while on assignment; alternative care arrangements must be established.

• Employment in another job during normal school hours while on assignment is not permitted.

• Required orientation and training programs must be completed within 30 days of hire and at the start of each school year.
