Scientific Director, Youth Safety & Wellbeing

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the scientific authority for the Youth Safety & Wellbeing priority area.

• Lead and oversee the Youth Safety & Wellbeing Scientific Advisory Group.

• Develop agendas, recruit and manage advisory members, and facilitate a peer-level scientific forum.

• Represent CBSAI as a credible scientific spokesperson for this priority area.

• Maintain an extensive, up-to-date network within academia, clinical practice, and industry research.

• Take ownership of the Specifications workstream for Youth Safety & Wellbeing.

• Convert behavioral science and scientific evidence into product and design specifications suitable for engineering.

• Establish a high scientific standard for evidence-informed actions in this rapidly changing field.

• Function as the scientific reviewer and approval authority for Public Guidance deliverables.

• Collaborate with Center staff on cross-workstream inquiries and deliverables.

• Safeguard scientific conclusions and methodologies against commercial, reputational, and funding pressures.

• Raise independence or firewall issues with the Executive Director.

• Represent CBSAI's scientific agenda at key gatherings, industry discussions, and public forums.

• Cultivate relationships within the scientific community, AI firms, and funding entities.

• Directly manage the Product Lead and assist in shaping the growth of the Specifications workstream team.

• Aid in establishing the model for future Scientific Leads in priority areas.

⛳️ Requirements

• Ph.D. in a relevant area such as developmental or clinical psychology, public health, human-computer interaction, cognitive/behavioral science, or a related field.

• Active or recent research experience in youth development, media/technology impacts, or a closely related domain.

• Practical understanding of and demonstrated involvement with AI systems.

• Established and recognized presence in the youth safety/wellbeing research community.

• Prior experience chairing, participating in, or otherwise leading a scientific advisory board, review panel, or similar expert gathering is preferred.

• Capacity to establish a defensible evidentiary standard and make decisions without needing complete consensus from the field.

• Strong aptitude for building relationships with senior academics, leadership in AI companies, funders, and policymakers.

• Proven history of maintaining independent stances under commercial or institutional influence.

• Extensive network across academic, clinical, industry, and policy sectors focused on youth safety and technology.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment within a newly formed, pilot-phase organization.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.

• Skill in translating scientific complexities for engineering, policy, and public audiences.
