Risk Management Manager – Captive Insurance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Act as the main internal authority for property and casualty claims across involved operating companies.

• Develop guidelines for claim submissions and handling based on deductibles, captive funding, administrative expenses, loss history, and overall economic impact.

• Supervise significant and emerging claims, perform regular claim assessments, and question reserves, settlements, litigation tactics, vendor usage, and claim management.

• Bring critical, sensitive, or underperforming claims to the attention of executive leadership.

• Seek subrogation, recovery, return-to-work, and additional loss-mitigation opportunities.

• Set and oversee claim-handling standards for third-party administrators (TPAs).

• Monitor claim closure rates, reserve changes, claim timelines, legal costs, and other performance metrics.

• Coordinate involvement in the captive insurance program and assess funding mechanisms, loss distributions, retained-loss frameworks, shared loss experiences, and administrative fees.

• Evaluate captive performance, reconcile claims and loss data, collaborate with captive service providers, and prepare management reports.

• Identify opportunities for enhancing program structure, retentions, funding, and claim-handling practices.

• Manage the annual property and casualty renewal process, including exposure data, loss information, renewal requests, and supporting materials.

• Analyze losses and exposures to inform decisions regarding deductibles, retentions, captive involvement, and risk transfer.

• Review renewal proposals with Finance and executive leadership, assessing changes in premiums, retained risks, and overall cost of risk.

• Maintain awareness of program structure, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and key coverage issues.

• Generate claims, loss, and total-cost-of-risk reports by operating company.

• Develop internal allocation methods for captive and insurance costs in collaboration with Finance.

• Identify loss patterns and root causes, communicating findings to operating company leadership and Safety.

• Convert insurance and captive concepts into actionable decisions for operations.

• Create exposure-adjusted scorecards to compare the performance of operating companies.

• Collaborate with operating companies to enhance claim reporting, incident documentation, and claim management discipline.

• Oversee daily interactions with TPAs, claims service providers, brokers, carriers, captive administrators, actuaries, defense attorneys, and other external stakeholders.

• Establish service expectations, evaluate vendor performance, and pinpoint opportunities for service enhancement or cost reduction.


⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in commercial property and casualty insurance, corporate risk management, claims consulting, TPA account management, or captive insurance.

• Extensive knowledge of workers’ compensation, automobile liability, and general liability claims.

• Experience with loss-sensitive insurance programs, large deductibles, self-insurance, or captive insurance is highly preferred.

• Proven experience managing TPAs, adjusters, brokers, or insurance carriers.

• Capability to analyze claim and loss data from a financial perspective rather than solely from an adjusting viewpoint.

• Proficient in Excel and data analysis.

• Strong judgment and the ability to challenge external service providers as necessary.

• Effective communication skills with field operating leaders, finance professionals, executives, and insurance experts.

• Experience in construction, field services, industrial services, transportation, or another decentralized operating environment is highly preferred.

• Professional designations such as ARM, CPCU, AIC, or similar credentials are beneficial but not mandatory.
