This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Jordan.

📋 Description

• Oversee violations of press freedom in Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and Jordan, including incidents of arrest, censorship, attacks, and legal intimidation.

• Generate daily news alerts, public statements, and comprehensive features regarding emerging issues related to press freedom.

• Translate interviews, reports, and official documents between Arabic and English.

• Coordinate investigative research, case mapping, OSINT analysis, and cross-verification efforts with civil society partners.

• Maintain and update CPJ’s databases concerning press freedom violations.

• Engage with journalists, media professionals, and organizations focused on press freedom and human rights for interviews and case updates.

• Notify the Levant Program Coordinator of urgent developments in press freedom.

• Assist in advocacy initiatives and international engagement and awareness campaigns.

• Provide research assistance for Journalist Assistance requests.

• Manage the distribution of editorial content on CPJ MENA’s social media platforms and via MailChimp.

• Collaborate with the Levant team and the MENA Program.

• Participate in at least one weekly team meeting and one all-staff meeting.

• Offer occasional after-hours support for urgent matters.

• Execute any other tasks as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of professional experience in researching, reporting, and writing about press freedom and broader freedom of speech issues.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities.

• Deep understanding of media and human rights issues in the MENA region.

• Strong dedication to the principles of press freedom.

• Proficiency in Arabic and English, with capabilities in reading, writing, and speaking.

• Familiarity with Google Workspace applications.

• Experience collaborating across time zones with international teams.

• Capability to work independently and take initiative.

• Strong interpersonal skills and project management expertise.

• Thorough understanding of journalistic standards.

• Applicants must possess the legal right to work in their desired location.

• Proficiency in additional regional languages is an advantage.

• Experience with Salesforce is a plus.

• Prior experience covering the region and having established contacts is preferred.

• Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
