Regional Editor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Actively cultivate and maintain a strong network of member centers, partners, and freelance journalists throughout the Pacific region.

• Offer guidance and assistance to member centers, fellows, and partners in developing story concepts and reporting strategies that align with OCCRP standards and facilitate impactful investigations.

• Provide focused mentorship and training for regional journalists and novice editors, fostering the growth of local newsrooms.

• Assist reporters in transcending surface-level news to create “follow the money” reporting strategies that result in high-impact investigations.

• Lead initiatives in acquiring new data and original datasets pertinent to the Pacific region.

• Form and oversee reporting teams that operate across various jurisdictions, cultures, and language skills.

• Collaborate closely with the current Pacific Islands Editor to ensure a cohesive regional strategy and smooth project execution.

• Work intimately with investigative and core teams throughout all stages of a story’s lifecycle, from the initial pitch to final publication.

• Mentor and support reporters in recognizing promising stories, ensuring that all work is thorough, accurate, and adheres to editorial standards, while implementing reporting guidelines from the investigative team.

• Steer the reporting process to guarantee timely completion of stories, maintaining momentum without compromising quality.

• Supervise the prompt inclusion of footnotes and verify that all fact-checking aligns with OCCRP’s stringent standards.

• Manage the Right of Reply (ROR) process, ensuring compliance with OCCRP's standards for sending and handling replies.

• Formulate and implement a regional coverage strategy that is in line with OCCRP’s global objectives.

• Partner with member centers and stakeholders to enhance the impact of published stories.

• Collaborate closely with audience, social media, and core teams to ensure effective production and promotion of all content.

• Lead reporting teams with the utmost professional judgment and discretion.

• Assume responsibility for ensuring all reporting complies with legal, ethical, and journalistic best practices as well as OCCRP policies, safeguarding the safety and integrity of the team and its sources.

• Identify risks faced by regional journalists and notify the security team of threats related to specific stories or journalists.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in journalism, with a significant focus on investigative reporting and editing.

• Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring teams of reporters, including freelancers and partners from diverse backgrounds.

• Extensive understanding of the political, economic, and media landscape of the specified region, with strong contacts preferred.

• Professional proficiency in English.

• Knowledge of other languages spoken in the region is a plus.

• Proven track record of producing or overseeing high-impact investigative stories that unveil crime and corruption.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively and respectfully in a remote, cross-cultural, and highly collaborative environment.

• Capability to work under pressure, manage tight deadlines, and navigate complex and potentially high-risk reporting scenarios with sound judgment.
