R&D Engineer – Optical Design, Computational Photonics

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Oversee sophisticated optical and multiphysics simulation projects for cutting-edge photonic systems.

• Create inverse-design and optimization strategies for intricate optical structures.

• Establish scalable computational frameworks that encompass optics, thermal, and electrical domains.

• Guide architecture-level trade-off analyses and system-level optical design choices.

• Partner with characterization teams to align simulations with experimental data.

• Facilitate co-development among devices, packaging, thermal systems, and photonic integration platforms.

• Formulate reduced-order analytical models alongside comprehensive numerical simulation workflows.

• Guide and mentor engineers, providing technical leadership throughout optical design and simulation efforts.

• Contribute to the formulation of future AI-assisted computational photonics workflows and design infrastructure.

⛳️ Requirements

• PhD or equivalent experience in Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.

• 8+ years of experience in optical design, computational photonics, or advanced device simulation.

• Strong expertise in optical simulation and numerical modeling.

• Proficiency with electromagnetic, optical, thermal, or multiphysics simulation tools.

• Excellent programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or scientific computing environments.

• Capability to link theoretical modeling with experimental validation and engineering limitations.

• Strong technical leadership and effective communication abilities.

• Experience with inverse design or optimization algorithms.

• Familiarity with semiconductor or integrated photonic devices.

• Robust multiphysics modeling skills.

• Experience in AI/ML-assisted simulation or optimization.

• Proven ability to connect device-level and system-level optical design.

• Track record of addressing challenging first-principles engineering problems.
