Propulsion Engineer, Solid

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Conceptualize, analyze, and create solid rocket motor and propulsion system components, subsystems, and integrated hardware throughout the phases of design, qualification, and production.

• Conduct engineering analyses focused on motor performance, internal ballistics, combustion, thermal conditions, structural integrity, insulation, nozzles, grains, cases, and other propulsion hardware.

• Formulate and implement engineering requirements, analyses, drawings, specifications, test plans, procedures, and technical documentation.

• Assist in propulsion development and qualification testing, which includes test planning, instrumentation needs, data analysis, anomaly investigations, and root-cause/corrective-action efforts.

• Collaborate across various functions, including manufacturing, quality assurance, testing, systems, program management, and suppliers, to enhance designs and address technical challenges.

• Contribute to design reviews, risk evaluations, failure analyses, and configuration changes throughout the product lifecycle.

• Balance aspects of performance, manufacturability, reliability, cost, schedule, and safety requirements.

• Depending on the level of experience, independently manage technical work packages or offer technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

• Report to the Engineering Manager in the Engineering Department.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 4–15 years of relevant experience in propulsion, aerospace, defense, or a closely related engineering field; OR a Master’s degree in a relevant area with 2–13 years of pertinent experience; OR additional relevant experience in place of a degree.

• Proven experience in the design, analysis, development, testing, or production support of solid rocket motors, solid propulsion systems, energetic systems, or similar aerospace hardware.

• Familiarity with one or more solid propulsion engineering domains, including internal ballistics, combustion, thermodynamics, heat transfer, structural analysis, nozzle design, grain design, insulation, case design, or propulsion performance analysis.

• Proficiency in applying engineering analysis techniques and tools to tackle complex technical challenges and assess design performance.

• Experience in supporting component, subsystem, or system-level testing and utilizing test data to assess performance, investigate anomalies, and guide design decisions.

• Strong ability to convey technical information effectively through engineering documentation, technical presentations, design reviews, and cross-functional teamwork.

• Depending on experience level, proven capability to independently lead technical projects, work packages, or intricate engineering initiatives.

• Willingness to travel up to 10%, including occasional overnight trips, as needed to support testing, suppliers, customers, or program requirements.

• Candidates must fulfill applicable eligibility standards for U.S. Government export regulations.

• Candidates must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. Citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).

• Candidates must be eligible to secure any required export authorizations from the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Department of Commerce.
