This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Conduct thorough investigations, evaluations, and management of professional liability claims from the initial stage to resolution.
• Assess coverage matters and ascertain the relevance of policy terms, conditions, and exclusions.
• Set and modify suitable reserves according to developments in claims.
• Formulate and implement strategies for claim resolution, which include negotiation and settlement processes.
• Provide guidance on litigation strategies, encompassing discovery, motion practices, mediation, and trial preparations.
• Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as necessary.
• Assess liability and damages through a blend of legal, factual, and industry-specific expertise.
• Deliver precise and timely financial forecasts concerning claims portfolios.
• Maintain proactive communication with insured parties, brokers, and management personnel.
• Provide updates on claims and coverage determinations.
• Assist underwriting teams by sharing insights on claims and loss trends.
• Ensure that claims handling complies with regulatory mandates, internal standards, and industry best practices.
• Prepare comprehensive reports for management, insurance carriers, reinsurers, and auditors.
• Identify emerging trends, issues, and exposures within the realm of professional liability.
• Offer constructive feedback to underwriting and risk management regarding loss drivers and prevention strategies.
• A valid NYS Adjuster License is required; licenses in multiple states are preferred.
• A JD degree is preferred.
• 3-5 years of experience in handling professional liability claims are required.
• In-depth knowledge of claims practices, litigation processes, and insurance coverage is essential.
• Experience in managing complex and/or high-exposure claims is necessary.
• Capacity to work independently and make sound judgment calls is crucial.
• Strong negotiation, analytical, and organizational abilities are needed.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Proficiency in claims management systems and the Microsoft Office suite is necessary.
• Experience in one or more specialty areas (e.g., Education, Public Entity, EPLI, E&O) is preferred.
• Prior litigation experience or a legal background is preferred.
• Familiarity with excess and surplus lines or specialty insurance markets is preferred.
• Experience with reinsurance reporting and complex coverage issues is preferred.
