This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take charge of the roadmap for the native applications experience: TSNet, tailscale-rs, and the tailscale CLI.
• Establish the definition of "Tailscale-native application," including reference architectures, optimal paths, and embedding patterns, presented as documentation, examples, and sample applications for developers to utilize.
• Oversee the entire developer experience: from the transition from a blog post to running an embedded node, ensuring API usability, error messages, effective documentation, compile-ready examples, and upgrade paths that do not disadvantage early adopters.
• Define the strategy for the Rust SDK family: determining which capabilities of TSNet to port, which to omit, the sequence of implementation, and how to effectively market the library to developers.
• Treat the CLI as an independent product: focusing on scripting usability, output standards, automation interfaces, and the experience for platform and SRE teams using Tailscale in CI and infrastructure-as-code.
• Manage the internal dogfooding process. Aperture and Tailscale PAM rely on these core functionalities; engage with these teams as your most critical customers and convert their challenges into your roadmap.
• Collaborate with GTM and Customer Success on embedding agreements — including AI platforms, developer tools, and infrastructure software that integrate Tailscale within their products — and use insights gained to guide priorities.
• Interact with developers in their environments (GitHub issues, Discord, office hours) to create a comprehensive understanding of the needs of embedded developers.
• Minimum of 6 years in product management or a software engineering background transitioning into product, with substantial experience in a developer-facing product: such as an SDK, API, CLI, library, or developer tool.
• Experience in launching developer-facing features that were utilized in production, along with the ability to navigate the implications of your design decisions, including naming conventions, defaults, error handling, and versioning.
• Proficiency in reading Go and/or Rust and engaging in credible technical discussions regarding API and SDK design.
• A refined sense of developer experience, including well-founded opinions on API usability, documentation, error messages, and onboarding processes, supported by relevant examples.
• Conduct customer research tailored to developer products — analyzing GitHub issues, engaging in Discord discussions, hosting office hours, and identifying patterns amidst the feedback.
• Transform vague scopes into tangible deliverables, ensure feedback loops post-launch, and keep teams updated throughout the process.
• An inclusive, flexible environment where you can be your authentic self.
• A competitive total compensation package.
• Comprehensive group benefits with no waiting period.
• Remote-first company—most of our teams work fully remotely.
• Employer-funded retirement contributions.
• Connect with other Tailscalars in real life.
• Support for your personal and professional development.
• Paid time off and a healthy work-life integration.
• A customizable home office setup.
• Paid parental leave program.
