This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.
• Take ownership of product design from start to finish across all platform surfaces, including workflow designer, form builder, administration, case management, e-signature system, dashboards, and reporting.
• Streamline complex systems, which involve multi-stage workflows with conditional routing, role-based permissions, and approval chains.
• Ensure that this power is easily accessible and not concealed.
• Create AI-driven experiences by defining how AI is presented to users, including intelligent recommendations, conversational interfaces, assisted configuration, and document intelligence.
• Tackle the unique UX challenges associated with AI, such as trust, transparency, and graceful failure, with the backing of product and engineering teams.
• Lead UX research initiatives, managing usability testing and design validation, and collaborate with product teams on broader user discovery efforts.
• Engage with agency staff and residents to comprehend constraints that differ from consumer applications, including compliance, accessibility mandates, legacy integrations, and multi-tenant configurations.
• Establish and enhance the design practice by creating a design system, defining research and critique schedules, and setting documentation standards.
• Leverage AI tools to expedite research, prototyping, and design workflows.
• Collaborate closely with engineering—there's no handoff culture. You will be integrated with the team from problem definition through to production.
• Utilize tools like Figma, Cursor/Claude, and Lovable to keep the design process aligned with engineering timelines.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience designing complex software products (SaaS, enterprise, or B2B).
• Strong foundation in UX principles, including information architecture, interaction design, prototyping, usability testing, visual design, and accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508).
• Proven capability to navigate ambiguous problems from research to delivered, validated solutions.
• Familiarity with an AI-native design workflow, utilizing AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Figma AI, Cursor, Lovable, or similar) as an integral part of your daily work, and able to explain how AI influences your processes and outcomes, rather than just having experimented with it.
• A portfolio demonstrating your design judgment and the impact on customers, showcasing how you approached problems, what was delivered, and the changes experienced by users.
• Clear and concise written communication skills—design decisions articulated without jargon, and specifications that engineers can effectively implement.
• Strong indicators of experience designing for power users—software where individuals configure, customize, or create, rather than merely consuming content.
• Interest or experience in government, civic tech, legal technology, or other regulated and complex fields.
• Previous experience as a sole or founding designer, thriving in environments with ownership and ambiguity.
• Experience building or significantly contributing to a design system.
• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—enough to comprehend engineering limitations and design within those parameters.
• Experience designing AI-enhanced features or a deep understanding of AI-specific UX challenges (trust, transparency, graceful failure).
• A product-oriented mindset, not just focused on design execution; willing to challenge requirements when necessary.
• Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, with substantial employer contributions for both employees and their dependents (contributions based on base-level plan; buy-up options available at additional costs).
• Company-funded life insurance, as well as short-term and long-term disability insurance.
• 11 paid holidays each year.
• Flexible time off policy.
• 401k plan featuring a 4% employer match.
• Monthly stipends to cover home office expenses.
• Monthly wellness stipends.
