Principal Generalist Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design and develop dependable, scalable, and observable production-grade systems.

• Take ownership of systems from end-to-end, encompassing problem definition, design, data handling, implementation, deployment, and operations.

• Collaborate across application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems.

• Troubleshoot complex production issues across various layers.

• Make engineering trade-offs based on fundamental principles.

• Enhance performance, latency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

• Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction.

• Produce maintainable code and comprehensive documentation.

• Elevate the standard of engineering practices.

• Determine when to apply machine learning versus deterministic systems.

• Manage data from end-to-end.

• Train, assess, and refine models.

• Create reproducible pipelines.

• Deploy models and oversee performance, drift, and cost management.

• Troubleshoot system and model failures.

• Deliver functional production systems from ambiguous challenges.

• Simplify complexity and build trust in technical decision-making.


⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer science, including data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, and distributed systems.

• Solid grasp of probability and statistics.

• Experience in developing production systems at scale.

• Proficiency in programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, Rust, and SQL.

• Understanding of system behavior under load and potential failures.

• Familiarity with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes.

• Excellent debugging abilities.

• Capability to reason through invariants and failure modes.

• Knowledge of data systems, streaming systems, machine learning infrastructure, and performance optimization techniques.
