Principal FPGA Networking Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, implement, and validate FPGA-based networking solutions tailored for space-oriented electronic systems.

• Develop on-board networking, data transportation, RF, processing, and data storage solutions utilizing AMD (Xilinx) technologies.

• Create networking pipelines that encompass Ethernet MAC/PHY integration, packet parsing/classification, switching/forwarding, buffering, and QoS.

• Construct packet-switching fabrics, router/switch data paths, control logic, and buffering/queuing architectures.

• Establish and maintain FPGA designs using VHDL and Vivado IP Integrator.

• Code, simulate, and validate Ethernet interfaces, packet-processing modules, switching/routing/queuing logic, and control interfaces.

• Deploy solutions leveraging embedded ARM processors, DDR4 memory, and high-speed serial connections like Aurora, PCIe, and multi-rate Ethernet.

• Optimize hardware support for IP, TCP/UDP, VLAN, and QoS, including offload engines and checksum/segmentation mechanisms.

• Develop and sustain simulation testbenches.

• Define timing constraints and achieve timing closure for multi-clock, multi-interface designs.

• Generate design documentation, interface control documents, and performance characterization reports.

• Engage in code and design reviews while contributing to FPGA design methodologies.

• Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to fuse FPGA networking designs with system hardware, drivers, and networking stacks.

• Aid in board bring-up and system verification, encompassing link bring-up, traffic generation, protocol compliance testing, performance assessment, and FPGA ILA-based debugging.

• Guide junior engineers in FPGA networking architecture, protocol implementation, buffering/queuing, and verification practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• 9+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree or 7+ years with a master’s degree.

• Practical experience in FPGA-based networking design, including Ethernet (IEEE 802.3), high-speed serial connections, and packet-switched architectures.

• Familiarity with implementing or integrating networking protocols and functionalities in hardware, such as IP, TCP/UDP, VLAN, QoS, router/switch data paths, and routing look-up tables.

• Experience with firmware/RTL design, simulation, and verification for intricate, high-throughput FPGA systems.

• Proficient in RTL logic design and coding using VHDL and/or Verilog.

• Comprehensive understanding of FPGA design methodology, encompassing physical synthesis, static timing analysis, place/route, verification, power analysis, and timing closure techniques.

• Competence in writing simulation testbenches.

• Preferred: in-depth knowledge of data networking architectures, routers, switches, and network management principles.

• Preferred: familiarity with high-speed Ethernet interfaces, including 100G Ethernet.

• Preferred: understanding of multi-level security networking concepts and architectures.

• Preferred: experience with IPsec and MACsec.

• Preferred: expertise in designing and verifying hardware buffering and queuing schemes, such as FIFOs, circular buffers, and priority queues.

• Preferred: experience in networking testing and qualification, including performance and protocol compliance assessments.

• Preferred: experience with AMD (Xilinx) SoC/FPGA devices and the Vivado Design Suite.

• Preferred: familiarity with Vivado IP Integrator.

• Preferred: experience with Microsemi (Microchip) FPGAs and Libero.

• Preferred: knowledge of ModelSim/QuestaSim and/or Aldec simulation tools.

• Preferred: experience with UVVM, UVM, OVM, or similar simulation verification libraries.

• Preferred: hands-on experience with board bring-up, electronic lab equipment, and FPGA ILA-based debugging tools.

• Preferred: knowledge of revision control systems such as Git.

• Experience with Linux.

• Proficiency in C/C++.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a distributed team.
