
Principal Engineer I – Cloud Observability

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.
• Collaborate with a team of engineers and architects to enhance the Confluent Observability features.
• Partner closely with product management, engineering leadership, and other vital stakeholders across various teams at Confluent to develop and advance the overall roadmap.
• Impact the overall domain health and operational standards for Confluent Observability.
• Evaluate designs and code while elevating our technical standards.
• Spearhead the technology strategy for our observability features in Confluent Cloud and hybrid scenarios involving Confluent Platform.
• Guide a team of high-performing engineers and leads, assisting them in expanding their skill sets through hands-on experience and mentorship.
• Offer timely and constructive feedback, promote a growth mindset, and support team members in establishing and pursuing personal development goals.
• Foster a culture of excellence within the team by emphasizing hiring, communication, execution, and quality of work.
• Develop and oversee processes that empower the team to perform at their best.
• A minimum of 15+ years of hands-on software development experience, with the foresight to anticipate future technical needs for the product and devise plans to achieve them.
• Experience in bringing ideas to production is a key expectation.
• Willingness to engage actively—coding, debugging, designing—whatever it takes to deliver the product to production.
• Proven experience in building and operating large-scale systems, along with a solid understanding of fundamental systems operations (disk, network, operating systems, etc.). Experience in managing production services in the cloud is essential.
• Strong foundational knowledge in distributed systems design and development, as well as solid principles in concurrent and multi-threading programming.
• A self-starter capable of working effectively in teams, with a proactive approach to identifying symptoms of technical issues and reasoning through their causes, followed by addressing the root causes.
• Timely delivery of projects; ability to balance short-term technical decisions with long-term goals. A sense of urgency, a results-oriented mindset, and excellent prioritization skills are crucial.
• Capability to influence the team, peers, and upper management in technology-related decisions through effective communication and collaborative approaches.
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience is required. An understanding of various technologies, programming paradigms, and frameworks is necessary, along with the ability to pragmatically assess their use in production.
• Readiness to tackle critical customer production issues on-call; debugging and resolution will be necessary, requiring thorough log and metrics analysis with sound reasoning to identify the issue.
