Principal Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Define and lead the long-term technical architecture for Veem, encompassing payments, platform, data, integration, and operational systems.

• Create scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available distributed systems for global B2B payments.

• Oversee complex cross-functional engineering projects that involve multiple teams and systems.

• Propel modernization efforts, enhance platform scalability, and reduce technical debt.

• Set standards for architecture, reliability, observability, security, testing, and operational excellence.

• Spearhead AI transformation initiatives within engineering and operations.

• Design and deploy systems for AI agents, LLM, intelligent automation, and AI-assisted developer tools.

• Develop strategies related to stablecoins, blockchain, digital assets, and modern payment infrastructures.

• Assess emerging technologies, settlement mechanisms, fintech protocols, and platform investments.

• Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders.

• Provide guidance to executive and engineering leadership.

• Convert business priorities into scalable, actionable, and commercially viable technical solutions.

• In the first year, gain a deep understanding of Veem’s platform, architecture, customer base, payment flows, and business strategy.

• Build relationships across Engineering, Product, Security, Compliance, Data, Operations, and executive leadership.

• Identify architectural risks, constraints, and opportunities.

• Establish technical direction for high-priority initiatives.

• Lead or significantly influence platform, AI, payment, and modernization programs.

• Enhance the consistency of architectural and technical decision-making.

• Introduce AI capabilities that boost engineering productivity or operational performance.

• Define Veem’s technical stance on stablecoins and emerging payment infrastructures.

• Achieve measurable enhancements in scalability, reliability, developer productivity, or platform capabilities.

⛳️ Requirements

• Approximately 12–18 years of experience in software engineering.

• Experience at the Staff+, Senior Staff, Principal Engineer, Architect level, or equivalent.

• Profound knowledge of distributed systems, backend architecture, APIs, microservices, cloud infrastructure, and event-driven systems.

• Strong practical software engineering and architectural skills.

• Proven experience leading technically complex projects across various teams.

• Ability to shape technical strategy without direct authority.

• Background in fintech, payments, financial services, or other high-scale, highly regulated technology sectors.

• Understanding of scalability, data consistency, reliability, security, fault tolerance, and production operations.

• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to articulate technical trade-offs to both executive and non-technical audiences.

• Capacity to work efficiently in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and entrepreneurial environment.

• Preferred: Experience in B2B or cross-border payments.

• Preferred: Knowledge in payment processing, settlement, reconciliation, ledgering, treasury, foreign exchange, or financial APIs.

• Preferred: Familiarity with AI agents, LLM integrations, intelligent automation, machine learning platforms, or AI-enabled products.

• Preferred: Expertise in stablecoins, blockchain infrastructure, digital wallets, crypto payments, or digital assets.

• Preferred: Background at a modern fintech, payments, technology, or AI-native organization.

• Technical environment includes AWS, GCP, or Azure; distributed and event-driven architectures; backend platforms, APIs, microservices; messaging, streaming, and data systems; AI/LLM tooling; blockchain, stablecoin, and payment infrastructure; observability, reliability, security, and platform tooling.
