Principal Design Technologist, AI Design Tools

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of AI design tools for developers at Zillow.

• Collaborate with the Constellation team to enhance the MCP server: broaden its coverage, refine retrieval processes, and introduce new tools as the landscape evolves.

• Deliver and manage a Constellation Skill bundle for Claude Code, Cursor, and/or Figma.

• Create starter templates for Zillow's most frequented surfaces.

• Develop and sustain an evaluation harness that aligns AI-generated UI with Constellation's standards.

• Empower various disciplines to create their own AI tools by collaborating with design, research, content, and branding teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in design and front-end engineering, with significant expertise in one or more areas.

• Experience in producing internal-facing tools for designers or engineers that have measurably improved team workflows.

• Strong proficiency with contemporary AI coding tools (such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) and an understanding of the patterns that enhance their effectiveness in real codebases: structured context, retrieval, agent skills, evaluations, and tool integration.

• In-depth knowledge of front-end engineering.

• Ability to open pull requests in actual repositories, including the design system codebase.

• Familiarity with design systems: component libraries, tokens, primitives, accessibility considerations, and multi-brand or multi-surface theming.

• Proven skill in conveying technical concepts to senior design and product leaders and translating between different disciplines.

• A history of successful cross-functional collaboration: fostering strong working relationships with design, engineering, and product teams, and sharing responsibility for roadmaps and decision-making across these areas.

• Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders. You have swayed senior leaders' decisions using data and a well-defined perspective, and you can provide specific examples of this.
