Principal AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the architecture and technical strategy for AI functionalities across HotDocs, including model management, LLM and agent orchestration, retrieval strategies, evaluation, cost, and latency management.

• Convert AI architecture into a practical delivery roadmap.

• Transition AI-driven features from prototype to production at an enterprise scale utilizing .NET Core and React.

• Spearhead the implementation of AI throughout engineering via coding assistants, agentic workflows, test generation, code review, and documentation.

• Establish safe AI usage patterns and assess the impact of deliveries.

• Create evaluation harnesses, guardrails, observability, and governance practices for AI.

• Modernize and refactor legacy code to facilitate AI integration while enhancing scalability and reliability.

• Guide engineers through code reviews, design evaluations, collaborative sessions, and written instructions.

• Collaborate with product management, architecture, security, and customer-facing teams on the AI roadmap and decisions regarding build versus buy.

• Expand CI/CD pipelines for AI workloads, encompassing prompt and model versioning, automated evaluation gates, monitoring, and cost tracking.

• Ensure AI functionalities address customer needs and deliver responsive, transparent, and accessible user experiences.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 12 years of professional software development experience, including roles as a principal, lead, or staff-level technical expert.

• Proficient in .NET Core (C#) and React (TypeScript) or comparable SPA frameworks.

• Proven experience in designing and deploying production AI solutions, including LLM integration, prompt engineering, RAG, MCP, and agentic or tool-calling systems.

• Practical knowledge of cloud AI platforms and services like Azure OpenAI / AI Foundry or similar.

• Familiarity with orchestration frameworks such as Semantic Kernel.

• Experience in building and maintaining REST APIs.

• Proficient in Entity Framework and Azure SQL or SQL Server.

• Background in assessing and enhancing the quality of AI systems using test sets, benchmarking, human review loops, and managing non-deterministic behavior.

• Understanding of web applications and AI-specific security concerns, including secure coding, prompt injection, and handling sensitive customer data.

• Experience with Git and contemporary collaboration workflows like pull requests and branching strategies.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines such as Azure DevOps.

• Comfortable working in agile teams utilizing Jira and Confluence.

• Hands-on experience with AI tools within the SDLC and implementing them across a team.

• Demonstrated track record of technical leadership, mentoring senior engineers, leading design reviews, and influencing roadmap and architectural decisions.
